The reaction we should be having to watching Will Wheaton get bullied and harassed out of the fediverse is not "I thought you people would be better!" It's "I thought Mastodon was designed to protect people from exactly this."

Peoples is peoples, and we're going to find ways to be mean to each other no matter how we organize ourselves. Technology can constrain that meanness, or amplify it. Twitter's a megaphone. Can we build Mastodon into a nice set of noise-cancelling headphones?

@ellotheth

I don't think that advocating having strict censorship of mastodon and not holding individuals to account for their own actions is a reasonable position.

There is a code of conduct on each instance, it is being enforced, that's all that a free speech forum can do when tens of thousands of people who've been kicked off another platform twice deliberately try to abuse our community all at once.

wilw

@hhardy01 Yeah cool, me neither.

In this case, the .cloud admins were essentially DoS-ed into suspending the account because they couldn't deal with the volume of reports against it. That's a technology problem, and it's fixable.

wilw

@ellotheth

I can't agree. 60 reports per day isn't a technical issue, it's an excuse.

wilw

@ellotheth I don't know that there's a magic technology bullet to "stop bullying".

For me, I hoped Mastodon would be a 'slightly more decentralized birdsite' -- it's definitely that! I do appreciate the generally better tone here, too.

Ultimately, this is a social problem -- one that sadly appears in all kinds of social situations (there's jerks on IRC, web forums, Twitter, school, work, walking down the street, etc etc).

Maybe tech that respected Dunbar's Number would help...?

wilw

@meejah There is absolutely not a magic technology bullet to stop bullying.

wilw

@ellotheth @meejah Definitely. I don't know how many times I've told people "the hard part is ALWAYS the PEOPLE." Not the tech.

The only thing we can really do with tech isn't to stop bad behaviour, but to avoid amplifying or worsening it.

Tech inherently offers leverage that can make small bads huge problems. And I think we can manage to be better at that.

Definitely masto is trying to reduce amplifying abuse.

wilw

@ellotheth we still rely on instance-admins. and what I read from Wil's statement, it was the admins that eventually made him leave.

wilw

@ellotheth super frustrating. I keep trying to write something about this, but too disgusted to get my thoughts straight.

As you say, peoples will be peoples. It feels dirty to see the dark underbelly of the mob in action and the supposed benefits of the Fediverse fail so plainly

@ellotheth i had a hunch that mastodon was nicer because the bullies hadn't gotten here yet. My best guesses for solutions is either celebrities are on pay to join mastodon instances with paid moderators, or we use some kind of web of trust filtered gossip network

Mastodon for Tech Folks

This Mastodon instance is for people interested in technology. Discussions aren't limited to technology, because tech folks shouldn't be limited to technology either!
