this is gargron's response to my criticism for intentionally removing local and federated timelines from the mobile app

he used the mastodon account to hide behind and delete @avie 's comment and close all further discussion on it

despicable.

I do wish people wouldn't post things that amount to "ha ha, people use Linux and care about owning their computing time, imagine how much more they'd get done if they didn't."

I wouldn't be getting more done, I'd be in another industry.

hiding details of the material reality of how software operates and where data goes from users is bad, and calling that "good UX" is capitulating to the proprietary way of thinking that produces dark patterns and SaaSS

crypto is short for "cryptography"

if you want a shorter word for "cryptocurrency", the word you are looking for is "ponzi"

Oh wow, Germany's healthcare system is adopting Matrix as the base layer for their secure communications system.

Fitness plan for programmers:

every time a build or unit test fails, you have to do 10 push-ups.

You'll become either incredibly good at programming or insanely fit. Maybe both with a bit of perseverance 😅

Firefox may have lost up to 12% of its users in 2021. We're once again in danger of a single browser dominating the web as in the days of IE. What's worse is that Chrome is owned by a glorified advertisement company.

The Internet is just too important for Google to become the de facto gatekeeper.

And the fact that Chrome is open source really doesn't matter here. Google has tight control over the project. Maintaining a fork would require a herculean effort.

I've noticed more and more plugins being neglected/abandoned by their maintainers. Is this a gradle thing or just the general languishment of open source software? Or am I just getting unlucky?

They show you dancing robots, but what they are selling are murder bots.

basically every half decent programmer i know is in a state of near total despair about the state of modern computing, so that's probably a good sign

KDE Plasma powers the desktop of the Valve .

Congrats Valve for releasing ! Thank you for choosing Plasma!

Here's a little thing that may not be obvious to many people....

When you install an open-source app from Google Play or the Apple app store, there is no guarantee that what you install actually matches the public code.

@fdroidorg are doing a great service. They independently build the public source code for apps from scratch, review for common issues, and publish their builds. Thanks to "reproducible builds" it's possible to verify they do not tamper with the code.

Just came across @tindall in a news article! A class action against Microsoft's attempted capitalist enclosure of all FOSS with their AI programming tool trained on our copyleft code is a a great idea

I'm pretty happy with this draft so far!

github.com/cooperativesource/l

What it does:
1. Creates a mutual-aid software ecosystem through copyleft
2. Allows cooperatives to sell their software to non-cooperatives
3. Encourages the creation of new cooperative projects, with a clear def.

I honestly have a hard time using any device that doesn’t have an adblocker. The internet without one is an incredibly frustrating experience.

RT @RonAmadeo@twitter.com: So @lmanul quit #Google and released a bunch of internal-only Google comics, and I have a favorite. goomics.net/50/
