Twenty-five speakers have already confirmed their presence at the Free Silicon Conference (#FSiC):

The introduction on Day 1 will begin with talks of:

1. Purism (puri.sm/)
2. Wiring (wiring.org.co/)
3. Echopen (echopen.org/)

Which impact will the first free and open (layout included) chips have on security, education and cooperative projects?

Check if your favourite app secretly sends data to Facebook.

40% of free apps in Google Playstore send data to Facebook (media.ccc.de/v/35c3-9941-how_f).
Even innocent-looking things like a flash light app.

Besides the unwanted data leak there is another problem: Non-technical people can't even notice if an app unexpectedly connects to FB.

With 'Net Monitor' you can easily check which app connects to which server: f-droid.org/en/packages/org.se

No root permissions necessary.

I recently moved to Germany (social.tchncs.de): @t0k

In future I will be more active there 😉

Why? I think it does't make sense to send my poor IP packets the long way over the pond if there is a mastodon instance just next doors. Also being in the same time zone has its advantages.

Block unwanted connections by Android apps.

Found an app that connects to `graph.facebook.com`? Suspicious? Want to block this connection?
What about:
* Fully denying internet access to that app? -> Check out AFWall+ f-droid.org/en/packages/dev.uk
* Just blocking a single host? -> AdAway supports user defined black-lists (and block a lot of ads by default) f-droid.org/en/packages/org.ad

Gravatar fun facts: sites leaking users e-mail addresses.

Do you know ? It is a service providing profile pictures for many other sites. The picture is generated pseudo-randomly based on a seed. Some sites use the md5 value of the users email as a seed. This can be used to recover the mail address of accounts.

Here's an easy example. Do you find the input to the md5 function? (I chose a simple word, not a mail address)

RT @JaredNaude@twitter.com

Someone sent a message using IPv6 packets constructing a message using morse code that is visible from the monitoring system:
"Use more bandwidth"

Really cool! 😎

"We found that at least 61 percent of apps we tested automatically transfer data to Facebook the moment a user opens the app. This happens whether people have a Facebook account or not, or whether they are logged into Facebook or not."

Looking for an alternative to GitHub and GitLab? Have a look at: codeberg.org

It is a German non-profit organization with the goal to provide Open-Source code with "a safe and friendly home".

Plus: You can have private repos for free.

And: In contrast to GitLab there are no trackers on the website.

Where can you download, modify and share a silicon IP block just like you do, say, with gcc?

Nowhere.

The licenses of mainstream proprietary silicon CAD tools explicitly forbid publishing anything created with them. This is partially due to keep algorithms, such as place-and-route, more secret.

It is like writing a book with a proprietary word processor and then not having permission to publish it for not revealing how the grammar checker works.

Free silicon requires free CAD tools.

Facebook getting more creepy

This is why you need to delete the Facebook app and ideally your profile. If there are friends and family that are the reason you still have a profile, find alternative messaging and photo sharing solutions. buzzfeednews.com/article/nicol

Hi there 😀! I just arrived here and wondering what's going on in the mastoworld.
I'm always happy to read and write about , , , , ...
Are there some suggestions of whom to follow? Maybe ordered by topic?

Mastodon for Tech Folks

This Mastodon instance is for people interested in technology. Discussions aren't limited to technology, because tech folks shouldn't be limited to technology either!
