@fedilab I think you took the right decision. I don't think it's your role to judge who I have to be able to see or not. Your role is to give me access to Fediverse, that's all. Thanks for taking that much care about users of your app, Tom! I really appreciate all the hard work you make with Fedilab!

Matrix

matrix.org apparently having hardware problems.

I've been saying it for a while, but the project really needs to put more emphasis on running homeservers. This means redesigning the initial setup of Riot apps to make using another homeserver trivially easy. The way it's done right now strongly guides the average user to matrix.org.

Welp merged the instance rickroll PR, anyone know of other open source android clients that actually respects users?

KDE has adopted non-proprietary and decentralized instant messaging services and is now running its own community-managed instance of Matrix

KDE is now officially using Matrix for collaboration within KDE! Matrix is an open protocol and network for decentralised communication (which means you can follow and comment from a different instance of Matrix where you already have a presence), backed by an open standard and open source reference implementations for servers, clients, client SDKs, bridges, bots and more. It provides all the features you’d expect from a modern chat system: infinite scrollback, file transfer, typing notifications, read receipts, presence, search, push notifications, stickers, VoIP calling and conferencing, etc. It even provides end-to-end encryption (based on Signal’s double ratchet algorithm) for when you want some privacy. squeet.me/objects/962c3e10e38e

@xm
While being perfectly aware about some limitations in #matrix at its current state, it simply works for small groups and gives a unified user experience across iOS and android.

I am not interested about a more or less theoretical discussion if this will still work with a million users, as this is not what I need.

One thing I /do/ like about #XMPP and #Matrix both being actively developed and things at once is that they're not necessarily adversarial.

Sure, each one's developers may prefer that they get used instead of the other, but being federated systems. But there's no reason not to have transports or gateways between them. They're documented protocols, both communities are committed to openness so we won't have any of the nonsense where AOL went around IP-blocking any well-used transport. A user gained by either is a user both can talk to, at least potentially.

♲ @jaywink@jasonrobinson.me:

Matrix 1.0, Synapse 1.0 and the Matrix Foundation

jasonrobinson.me/media/uploads…

We are very excited to announce the first fully stable release of the #Matrix protocol and specification across all APIs - as well as the Synapse 1.0 reference implementation which implements the full Matrix 1.0 API surface.

This means that after just over 5 years since the initial work on Matrix began, we are proud to have finally exited beta!! This is the conclusion of the work which we announced at FOSDEM 2019 when we cut the first stable release of the Server-Server API and began the Synapse 0.99 release series in anticipation of releasing a 1.0.

a non-violent, non-destructive crime you can do

✅ find a really old TV with a UHF dial
✅ attach antenna
✅ browse around UHF channels 80-84
✅ stop when you hear one-to-three-second snippets of people talking
✅ tell a buddy what you heard

Congratulations! You just intercepted and disclosed an electronic communication, 18 U.S. Code § 2511, a felony w/5 years max imprisonment.

Can we please stop proclaiming the end of the fediverse! Just because someone with ideas you don't agree with is joining the fediverse does not mean that the fediverse is over. It means its getting popular! If there's any danger to the fediverse, its the threat of censorship by oligarchs. Who want to silence the opinions they disagree with.

We do not mute or block any other instances at the moment.

There hasn't been any issues with other instances and we are happy with that. If we do perform an instance moderation action we will announce it here.

Gab thought experiment

@switchingsocial
- what danger? Blocking nazis is fine, but it's not how you fight them. It only helps them look persecuted and gain sympathy like the guy you're subtooting
- while everyone chimp out at a bunch of pathetic loonies, the same people are very complacent to other ideologies that are objectively as bad as nazis
- Freedom of speech is not nice and comfortable. It either exists for everyone (incl. disgusting people) or for no one (incl. you). Deal with it
