Need to choose Lithium battery chemistry vs NiMH for an esp8266 project - I don't need the weight advantage and I quite like not having the battery burst into flame while charging it, but wondering if there's any significant environmental considerations to take into account. I know lithium mining's not pretty
Today's act of kindness: I helped two victims of surveillance (mainstream users) with some basic privacy:
Google search > DuckDuckGo
Chrome > Firefox + uBlock Origin
Gmail > @Tutanota
Minimize number of apps
Simple actions that cuts a big chunk of surveillance. As usual they were surprised how it works.
This might be another reason Dieter Rams' designs are so enduring
Everything has a clear purpose and is instantly intuitive. And yet, there's immediate feedback when in use
I know minimalism isn't everyone's preference, but this is probably the right balance
I think maybe the revival of retro-inspired hardware is more than just nostalgia or aesthetic preference
There was a distinct priority given to actual usability before so many of our interactions became "flat". Extreme minimalism takes away from the joy of interacting with technology
Part of why modern tech feels sterile is because the human interaction has no tactile feedback at all. We're barely holding on to physical keyboards as it is

Should I change distro?
I don't know if I should do some distro hopping before Ubuntu 20.04. The distro I would like to try are much less than when I was a distro hopper but the complexity of my configuration grew since then and this make changing distro much more time demanding.
Sometimes I want back to times, when #xmpp protocols were dominant for IM. I am fed up with of having bunch of messengers on every single my computer: telegram, skype, slack and more. I just want to have a single client to talk to people.
And no, I don't want stickers and video messages. Audio messaging support would be very nice. But a *single* client, not bunches of them.
This Mastodon instance is for people interested in technology. Discussions aren't limited to technology, because tech folks shouldn't be limited to technology either!
