@sudoreboot Not really. In Star Wars droids are portrayed as much more sentient than that. Also the 1930s film influences on Star Wars often show up the most in the activities of the droids, which gives droids too many visual shorthand indications of (unwitting) slave labor.
Oh I agree that they're sentient and wouldn't condone mistreating them, but I can't argue with the logic that they're a security risk he can't afford in his line of work
