In January of 1976 I was on the air (noon hour?) at KBOA in Kennett, MO, when the police scanner in the studio went nuts. Someone (dispatcher? patrolman?) was yelling that someone had robbed the bank and “took off in an airplane!” I grabbed a cassette recorder and dashed out of the station.

I think it might be more of a small town thing than a tech thing. If I still lived and worked in Kennett, and this happened today... the big difference would be I'd do the interview on my iPhone and I could probably "go live" from the scene using an app on that same phone.
@smays somewhat I'm sure, just wonder if corporate culture would encourage or allow. Not many independent businesses anymore
