Just seems like a really lazy way to express oneself. If a thought or sentiment can be expressed with one of these tiny pictograms, I wonder if it needs to be expressed at all.
Are people who make heavy use of emoji less likely to be readers of books? Can't imagine that data exists but I'd love to know.

@smays I agree, that sounds a lot like the same arguments against what i call "idiotbabble" (those abbreviations such as "ppl" for "people" that make text damn near unreadable). Many times on IRC help channels, I'd say "if you can't be [bothered] to spell out a six-letter word, I can't be [bothered] to help you". And that's how I felt.
