Today I discovered the hard way that TP-Link W2400 mesh routers, while they are capable of 5GHz Wi-Fi speeds, ONLY HAVE 10/100 Network ports. What schmuck designed these things??
Glad I noticed quickly enough to return them. Seriously, when is it ever the WIRED connection that's the bottleneck for a Wi-Fi network?
PSA: please do not use "religion" when you mean Christianity, abortion
Attempting to get ahead of the inevitable backlash: US abortion bans are not an expression of *religious* freedom. They are an expression of certain *Christian* views.
In Judaism, there are many cases where abortion is halachically mandated: https://www.jta.org/2019/05/22/opinion/what-jewish-law-really-says-about-abortion (a good overview from an Orthodox perspective) Banning abortion infringes upon Jewish religious freedom, so please don't say "religion" when you mean Christian.
A few years ago I made this flow chart of which Mastodon posts end up in which timelines!
So, you can see how each instance will have a different local timeline, and even a slightly different federated timeline - and you can see why the federated timeline moves so much faster than the local one, too.
This is why it's important to boost good posts and use hashtags - the fediverse is fragmented and harder to search by nature.
This plays one of his famous melodies. The 'play' command is part of the Sox package.
I guess I should have made it more clear, the guy in the picture is not the Michael Sweet who developed CUPS, it's Michael Sweet, the Chirstian Metal singer/guitarist. I mean maybe he used Unix, but given the demons, probably not.

Masto meta, moderation, mh
This thread on birdsite, from someone who apparently did moderation for LiveJournal, is giving me pause: https://twitter.com/rahaeli/status/1036304096280621063
I've already seen some disturbing images after doing Masto moderation for a year, but if I had to deal with it day in and day out, I don't know how my brain would handle it.
I think I'll try #LinuxMint19 quick in a VM.
Oh wait, I should update Virtualbox.
Oh wait, I now have to update Vagrant.
Oh wait, now I have to install VBox extension updates.
... why is nothing ever as quick as it is in my head?
I mention this mostly because I work in constant fear that I will use the phrase "hey guys" or "that's crazy" to the wrong mix of coworkers and be reported.
This feels a bit too 1984 NewSpeak-ish for my comfort.
Businesses must tread lightly regarding "offensive language" in the workplace lest they end up in legal trouble. I get it.
BUT this has lead to "weaponized HR" and a culture of fear. Fear of speaking freely in the workplace because someone might overhear "offensive language".
Lately it seems _anyone_ can deem _anything_ offensive and HR just has to bow to the pressure. Where is the "be reasonable" line?
Limiting questions rage
Goddamn it annoys me when I see people asking "how do I use [tool/programming language/library] to achieve [objective] with [constraints]", when it's very clear they haven't got a good reason to have selected [tool].
Just say "I want to achieve [objective] with [constraints]"! Sometimes [tool] is inappropriate, and it just hampers people that want to help you!

social media + mob rule
Mob rule on social media is merciless.
I've been lucky enough to never be on the receiving end of it. I suspect that's mostly just luck, relative anonymity, and avoiding topics which are likely to incite it.
There is no court of appeals. Only the willingness of the admin to deal with drama. In the Fediverse, that's likely one person. In their spare time. On a server they're probably paying for themselves.
If I were an admin in that situation I'd probably rage quit.
I'll have a black manhattan, stirred, not shaken. You don't shake a manhattan.
