@scottw or budget is tight but if we go anywhere that's a tipping establishment we don't skip it. And if we have a coupon or some kind of discount we to based on the pre-discounted amount. And it's sometimes a little disturbing how much just treating someone as human can mean. We've been greeted warmly when we've run across folks at the grocery store or elsewhere or recognized months after the last time we saw someone.
Reminder: Thank your servers when they do something for you whether it's bringing your meal or a refill for your drink. It's the polite thing to do, costs you nothing (that said, tip!), and they are working hard and if in the US they are probably underpaid (again, tip!).
(Speaking from experience as a former dishwasher, I don't know that anyone in a kitchen or out on the floor has an easy job. At a minimum you're on your feet nearly the entire time.)
