It's interesting how knowing the lengths of types for different common machines was once really important.
Nowadays we can (reasonably) safely assume the sizes across most platforms.

@samathy I think this buries the lede :) The outlier is the system that doesn't "flow" into what we have today. I hadn't heard of it before and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honeywell_6000_series makes an interesting skim and you can see why it's 9bit.
