@joenepraat for those wondering why the blinking patterns are so different: to ease navigation.

Imagine you're at night at sea, no GPS for whatever reason, but you do have your trusty nautical maps (which always contain information about blinking patterns of known lights).

If you see any lights you can figure which ones they are based on their patterns.

And based on their positions (if you see at least two) you can in turn figure out where you are.
