i don't understand how someone could spectate the popular media landscape in 2021 and have feelings that fame and celebrity are in ANY way desirable.

imagine wanting to step into the gross panopticon of tethering your livelihood to a never-ending telethon for vicious & mercurial gremlins.

you made a video/song/art that people like? congrats. enjoy the expectation to perpetually act as a perfectly flawless avatar of everyone's idealized self-image.

Realizing that pandemic isolation has strongly interfered with my ability to distinguish between whether I said it out loud or if that was just my internal monologue

Black Lives Matter protests have saved lives, study finds

Places with Black Lives Matter protests experienced a 15% to 20% decrease in police homicides from 2014 to 2019 — around 300 fewer deaths. “The gap in lethal use-of-force between places with and without protests widens over these subsequent years and is most prominent when protests are large or frequent.”

it cracks me up that google has this reputation in some hacker circles as being full of tech boffins and yet the google cloud website is the slowest website i deal with, by an extremely large margin

every db query ("show my 3 machines") takes several billion nanoseconds

begrudgingly coming around to the idea that lobsters has become a cesspool

it sucks because it feels like another example of fairness doctrine run amok: the attempt to protect the "only moderately bad faith" users causes some good-faith users to flee

"The huge power consumption of #Bitcoin is good for the environment: it will push to develop renewable energy".

"Tobacco industry is good for human health: giving cancer pushes to find a cure".

a text rant in defense of cryptocurrency that starts "who is pinboard anyway?" 🤦‍♂️

two wild things about this graph of IRC networks from

- the vast majority of freenode users haven't actually left yet, so the body hasn't hit the ground

- EFnet ("the" IRC network) is barely in the top 10 anymore!

reverse-engineering the actual mRNA code of the Pfizer SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, character for character and explaining it works. There are some fun mysteries along the way.
