Discover Pleroma. An alternative to Mastodon

I have a lot of curiosity for the different places and software we encounter on the Fediverse, if we are open minded and like to travel and see places.

I love Travel in the physical world, and similarly, am enchanted by roaming in cyberspace, through the many corners and alleys, express lanes and boulevards, parks, of the Fediverse.

Mastodon is not all there is, not even close. It is the largest part of the Fediverse, in terms of instances (servers) and registered users.

But there's more and that is a good thing. Pleroma, have you met?

That is the Topic of today's Blog.

Why do we see Hawaiian prints in Extreme Right rallies and imagery ?

A great series of Tweets sent by professor Reece Jones and now collated into one post, on Discourse Forum here

Short excerpt :

With growing alarm, I've watched armed white men protesting around the US. But, as a Hawai'i resident, I've wondered specifically about the reoccurring presence of aloha shirts. Here is a THREAD explaining the odd and concerning story behind it 1/13

Having space for longer messages, forums allow an easier reading, compared to the short twitter posts.

I will think about ways to publish it here via Toots possibly too -- the only problem would be how to keep the images in-line, along with the posted text from the original.

Recommended reading!

#Bugalloo is their name for armed insurrection. Civil War 2 is another possible name.

With the polarization and tensions, plus the huge number of arms in civilian hands in the US, it could turn tragic and bloody very quickly.

#FediReporter recognizing a great source and spreading it.

Getting Good Penpals, a Slowly Users Guide

This has been posted and recognized as a valuable resource at Reddit for maybe almost two months now.

After sitting in my Blog editor for almost 30 days, I decided to publish it -- in Two pages, with a final Part 3 coming soon dealing with the loaded question of "Adding friends via Slowly IDs".

See "Getting Good Penpals, a Slowly Users Guide - Part 1" here. This introductory part has background info, and continues on part 2.
See "Getting Good Penpals - 2. Three Ways to Go" for part 2.

Hope you enjoy reading this, a more detailed, illustrated and carefully written version of my original Reddit forum post.

Write.Freely Blogs -- showing an Excerpt :

I had asked, remembered seeing a mention to this a long time ago (when I was starting in WF, and there was so much to learn already).

There's a way to show an Excerpt -- just a stub, a small part of each post in your Blog, if the reader arrives there via its URL.

The Excerpt will show a small part of each page, and make it easier for a visitor to see what topics you have covered, before selecting which ones to read in full.

This is not the default display in the WF blogs, which will show Full Articles to a visitor. And if our pages are long, there's a lot of scrolling just to get an idea of what's covered in this particular blog.

Thanks to Ange at, my WF host, who sent me a link to the Writing Guide, I located the feature and how to do it.

Here's the paragraph in question :

Showing an excerpt

By default, your blog home page shows every post fully. However, you can choose to show an excerpt instead on any posts you want, creating a "Read more..." link at the end of the post that readers can click to get the full story.

To do this, simply insert <!--more--> where you'd like to split the post and end the excerpt. A great place for this is at the end of a paragraph.

And the result is a much more compact display on my own blog, now with about 70 pages almost.

Sharing this as I am certain that @globcoco and other writers might be interested and benefit.

Threaded Conversations -- a Viewer :

Last night I saw an interesting conversation in progress in the fediverse. While I was already involved in other talks, I kept notice and followed their posts, boosted one in particular as a personal bookmark and because it has an amazing feature highlighted.

I have taken a screenshot and posting it here -- but it's more than a graphical representation of the threads that branch out in normal conversations here (and sometimes can be rather baffling to many of us).

Colin has created a script that takes the fedi thread and produces an .svg like this one - "What is Tilde?"

Each post in the thread is shown, and it has a live link to the original - you can open it at the source if desired. Very nice work, and I thought it needed to be mentioned and shared.

So here it is -- thanks Colin and to the other participants.

And what is Tilde ? (subject of their conversation)

Tilde is the name of a collective of online unix shared system instances, and it's interesting - I started in the Net in the mid 90's, using a remote shell into, a similar organization, still alive and running now, 25 years later.

Learn more about the tilde movement at

we're a loose association of like-minded tilde communities. if you're interested in learning about *nix (linux, unix, bsd, etc) come check out our member tildes and sign up!

tildes are pubnixes in the spirit of, which was created in 2014 by paul ford.

member status in the tildeverse mainly involves some level of engagement or presence on irc; all other systems are independent.

Mastodon - Extra Uses for Delete/Redraft ?

Mastodon's Delete/Redraft is a nice and simple tool that can be used for various reasons.
The simplest is when you realize there's some small typo, or the wrong image was attached to a post. With Delete/Redraft, a quick fix is possible without having to re-enter the text, or to copy it to Clipboard, before using a Delete, then a full new post (or new reply to whichever post it related to, if that was the case).

I find this to be one of the RARE cases when Mastodon offers me more functionality than my Pleroma account -- where Delete/Redraft is NOT available (more on this later in the article).

So let's see how we can use this feature in more elaborate ways? Some more Advanced Use Cases for this nice tool.

A Better Browser possibly ?

Always looking for good alternatives. Will NOT use Chrome or even most of it's siblings. Exception, MS Edge new gen, but that is for special use cases only.

Now I found an interesting alternative to consider.

Waterfox is my all purpose and wonderfuly stable and fast browser. But LibreWolf seems intriguing too.

From LibreWolf Documentation

This project is an independent “fork” of Firefox, with the primary goals of privacy security and user freedom. It is the community run successor to LibreFox

LibreWolf is designed to minimize data collection and telemetry as much as possible. This is achieved through hundreds of privacy/security/performance settings and patches. Intrusive integrated addons including updater, crashreporter, and pocket are removed too

LibreWolf is NOT associated with Mozilla or its products.

Features :

Latest Firefox — LibreWolf is compiled directly from the latest build of Firefox Stable. You will have the the latest features, and security updates.
Independent Build — LibreWolf uses a build independent of Firefox and has its own settings, profile folder and installation path. As a result, it can be installed alongside Firefox or any other browser.
No phoning home — Embedded server links and other calling home functions are removed. In other words, minimal background connections by default.
User settings updates — We keep up with gHacks-user.js and pyllyukko’s user.js
Extensions firewall: limit internet access for extensions.

LibreWolf Home page. Available now for Linux, a Windows port is planned. Things to improve modern web life.

#FediReporter Tech update.

Reviewing it soon if I can get a linux machine running to my liking. #Manjaro seems the one!

New Discuss Forum now open at !

Wonderful to see a new Forum up and available for people — Thank you Leonie and Zack.

I just saw your reply to a comment in mastodon/Pleroma messages, and was glad to see you got it installed and running.

And it’s even a new type of Forum, I have used Discourse quite a bit recently but not seen Discuss. Looks good and has the essentials for me, that are so sadly missing in Mastodon in most cases:

enhanced text formatting as desired (here with MarkDown and BBcode supported).
In-line image placement, we can place an image anywhere in a post; not only at the end of it, like in normal mastodon practice.
Longer posts are no problem.

My first impressions are good — as I write this, I find the interface light and responsive, easier to use than Discourse which uses the two pane, side by side mode by default.

A Forum with all these features you described is basically as good as a Blog page for rich content posting. And CAN be used as a Draft building area for posts, later easily copied and pasted into the blog host.

I do use the Discourse forum like that sometimes, and a well crafted post can be directly imported into my Write.Freely blogs.

Forums add the Commenting that WF doesn’t have at this time (intentional, as they prefer to keep all ‘social distractions’ out of it).

Will be telling friends and posting about this.

Thanks for adding it, Leonie and Zack. Feels good!

Choices are Good.

While in vanilla Mastodon world, getting an admin to consider allowing more than the miserable 500 characters maximum toot size is a Tall Order -- I tried a few times, and was denied almost always, in more Advanced places we see innovation and openness.

Was just surprised to find not the Usual TWO choices of Front Ends (user interfaces, or web clients) at one of the Pleroma instances I have accounts on.

At, admin @a1batross now has 4 (FOUR!) choices at your disposal.

Pick between :

Pleroma FE, high polish, and full featured.
Mastodon FE, the usual web client most mastodonians will feel at home in.

Plus -- and this is all his customizing :

Bloat FE
And the brand new SoapBox FE, which just released it's 1.0 version.

I had seen SoapBox at other instance and been impressed. And it's nice to see it now available at FAB, EMR, and probably other places too.

Congrats to @a1ba and @alex !

June 23, Alan Turing's Birthday

"Alan Turing was an outstanding mathematician whose work has had an enormous impact on how we live today," Bank of England governor Mark Carney said on Monday. A statement by the Bank of England added that he "provided the theoretical underpinnings for the modern computer."

Turing's electro-mechanical machine, which foreshadowed the computer, broke the "unbreakable" Enigma code, which the Nazi authorities used to pass orders to their command chain. Bletchley Park, north of London, the site of Turing's work, remained secret until the 1970s.

Remembering his work, his brilliance. RIP.

After harsh punishment in the 1950's led to his suicide, many years passed until his tremendous contribution to the WWII Bletchley Park Code Breaking operation was acknowledged by the British Government.

Now he will be honoured with his portrait in the 50 Pounds bills in the UK.

Mastodon - Options for Moving an Account ?

"Take your information and do what you want with it."

That suggestive text sounds like Freedom of movement is granted and important, doesn't it? That is directly copied from Documents at

The truth is less rosy though. There are easy and reliable ways to :

Export the list of people you Follow.
Export lists of people you Mute (hiding their posts from your view)
Export lists of people and instances you Blocked (barring their content reaching you).

But, sadly -- your personal data, all the Toots you spent time in, the images and videos contained in them. Not easily accessible.

If an instance dies (and it does happen), it's all Lost. We need better. Facebook is now offering a wonderful User Data Export tool.

general tips on looking up information for any Pleroma instance.
and a list of recommended Pleroma instances for your consideration.

Moving a Mastodon Account ?

Don't think there's much we can do, sadly. Just searched and there's a good page but the news are NOT good.

You CAN request a zipped archive, of all your posts, images included. But :

Mastodon currently does not support importing toots or media due to technical limitations, but your archive can be viewed by any software that understands how to parse ActivityPub documents.

"Any Software" capable of handling that, even in a personal, offline, non-federated way -- I haven't seen any yet. If you know, please comment, thank you.

Sadly needed, at least for personal references!

Facebook HAS a new tool that allows an Export of a user's photos -- and it works wonderfully in my experience.

all photos were exported successfully.
it does NOT require any user effort (try downloading, 100 albums or more!)
Albums are created in the new destination (for the moment, supports exporting to Google Photos, only; others expected soon)
Albuns have the same names as the originals, with the addition of "Copy of [user's original title]"

And even each photo goes with the poster's comment attached to it.

Completely automated, reliable, full featured. I am impressed, kudos to Facebook for this.

#FediReporter thinks it's time we got something BETTER here too ?

Surprises on Fediverse always.

Like, this morning when I start visiting the various instances where I have accounts, friends, a presence.

I switch on my Pinafore client, which is really useful for someone like me. Easy to connect, one click instant switching.

Except, it shows 'Internet Request Failed - Showing offline content' when Todon.NL is the selected instance. A sign something is wrong, like the Net connection at our end being down, or even a remote server being offline for maintenance or other reason. That wasn't the case here though.

All the Details, plus an official Moving account announcement for my current, main personal account.

Hello, I wanted to let you know I will be writing a full Blog post, detailing my inquiring about an inter-instances issue, and the responses you offered.

I replied corteously, and do not understand the reasoning to find my personal account at Suspended (deleted is the proper word) this morning.

Too bad, but I now feel free to use the messages in my Journalism. I truly believe this was uncalled for and arbitrary.

A Blog page to follow with Full Disclosure of the whole issue.

I was pleasantly surprised by the interest generated by my Discover Pleroma. An alternative to Mastodon page. Various people contacted me, interested in trying out Pleroma, and asking for some recommended instances.

Is it important, which instance you are in ?

Yes, I believe so. And wrote a blog page about that which is currently my most popular one -- Is it Important, which Instance you are in?

This will be Part 1, with detailed suggestions on finding and evaluating Instances, via or sites. I will walk thru the exact criteria I used on a personal search about 10 days ago, and the nice results found.

Part 2 will be separate to keep page size reasonable -- and will directly and clearly list Recommended Instances. Writing and posting it next!
