Well here we go, a Synapse release candidate fresh from the press. 1.6.0rc1 contains federation support for cross signing, version 5 rooms by default and prep for database sharding. Check it out if you would like to help us test github.com/matrix-org/synapse/

Is it possible to run a single user instance on an Oracle Cloud Free Tier machine with 1v CPU and 1GB RAM?

As far as teasers go, this one you shouldn't miss! A data analytics app in development for #Nextcloud... Feedback welcomed by the author @z000ao8q of course. 💪💪

Coming to #Tusky Nightly today: Bookmark support!
It will only work with Mastodon instances that already run the new bookmarks code. Of course we will wait to release it in the stable channel at least until Mastodon did a release as well.

Hi fediverse! It's been awhile but I decided to put a Mastodon client back on my phone. How's it going?

Converting weird formats with Windows utilities running in wine inside of #toolbox on #silverblue like it's 1990. It's #darkmode though!

In order to secure your #Nextcloud from the #NextCry attack, you should keep all writable data on a volume that is mounted with `noexec`. Of course you should also make sure you have your setup up-to-date and check the current security best-practices for nextcloud.

Finally you should also make sure you have very regular backups of your data, don't consider synchronized data as backup.

My evil masterplan: Make everyone using Mastodon or the broader Fediverse in general.

Progress so far: 4 done, ~7 billion to go.

Database migration to new hardware is complete and so far things look pretty promising. We'll be doing further migrations over the next few days, but hopefully the root cause of the recent disruptions is now solved.

I played with delta.chat for a couple days. The concept is very admirable. Sending first messages to folks are just like emails. The get them in clear text, and can just reply from their MTA. But if they also have the delta.chat app, and reply, then it can roll over to E2E encrypted communication for that contact.

As for usability, their phone app is slightly nicer because it can access your phone's contacts. Otherwise feels about like Signal UI.

tl;dr; neat! but i'm not going to migrate

@matrix A good opportunity to highlight the decentralization of the protocol :)

There are so many easy ways to setup a synapse server nowadays, from your managed setup: modular.im

Over the official Ansible playbook:

github.com/spantaleev/matrix-d

To my very personal (undocumented :blobfoxsad:) playbook:

git.shivering-isles.com/shiver

Definitely worth looking into that.

Freenode bridge overloaded the matrix.org homeserver due to netsplits, meanwhile IO problems are still there. HOWEVER, we have a new datacenter ready to go which benchmarks ~10x faster - expecting to migrate over early next week.

@returntrip 👍🏻 It gets even more fun, when you put everything on LVM volumes or similar so you can make snapshots before you make backups.

This allows you to backup your databases while they are running :)

Example? Here you go: git.shivering-isles.com/shiver

Moved my named volumes to bind mounts so I can use to make backups directly from their directories. I guess 😃
