What's my options for people who refuse to use secure and open alternatives for communication? Is there an easy option for sending encrypted text via SMS that 'just works' on both Android and Ios?

Just re-upping this offer: because being comfortable with git is a barrier to entry to many FS/OSS projects, and because I care deeply about lowering those barriers, I will tutor anyone who asks for help with git, and/or connect them with any mentor(s) they might prefer.

I'll do this while I put energy and work into making the tool more approachable, and into making better tools and learning paths.

Boosts gratefully appreciated.

I was dreading self-hosting #mail again and so I was very happy to learn from @sir about Migadu.com. I’m going to give them a try because they have straightforward instructions on how to set it up using my own domain names. Swiss based but as I said elsewhere, I don’t quite understand why that is a benefit in terms of security. I do understand that it’s a benefit in terms of tax evasion, of course... Oh well. They’re hosting their stuff in France, by the way.

@Tusky Only thing I can think of is that the search is limited to my instance

@Tusky How does the posts search work in v9? Searching for "migadu" returns "Not found" but I know for sure that there are posts about migadu. Why is it not finding anything?!? 💓 Tusky

This is the PineTime. A companion for your Linux smartphone, and new side-project of ours. More news coming in the future...

(If you have experience with FreeRTOS or mbed, and are interested, please get in touch!)

Stefano boosted

Wow, we did not expect the level of interest you all have had in the #PineTime!

More info:
- Cost will be approximately 25USD
- Charging dock included in price
- Built-in heartbeat monitor
- Case built of Zinc alloy and plastic
- Battery life measured in days
- Sorry, can't run Linux itself. SoC is nRF52832, which uses a Cortex-M4 core. That's why we need FreeRTOS :)

⚠️ PSA 🎉

We have successfully tested @Tusky with Pixelfed!

Mobile app support will be tested next week on pixelfed.social and other instances.

Some screenshots of my current NextCloud + oauth + #Pleroma tinkering.

From what I can tell I've got the settings right, the URL that the "social login" button generates looks good but when I hit the pleroma endpoint I don't get any scope/perms popping up.

And if you try to login for authorization it just fails, even with a good user/password combo.

Anyone know where I may have things wrong / can point me to someone who may have done this sort of thing before or who has some additional ideas I may be missing.

How was your week? This Week in Matrix we're celebrating being included in Mozilla's shortlist of IM systems, looking forward to improved Slack bridging (1.0 incoming!) and MORE! Go read: matrix.org/blog/2019/09/13/thi

My News RSS app has stopped fetching articles. Anyone else here using Nextcloud (on docker) and having the same issue?

I've been building Flóðgátt, a replacement streaming API server for Mastodon. The goal is to cut RAM usage and make hosting an instance that much cheaper.

So far, we've cut RAM for the streaming server of an empty instance by ~94.2%

The next task is to make sure that lower RAM usage can scale without other issues (e.g., CPU).

To do that, I need a test server with enough connections to see how Flóðgátt performs under load.

That's where y'all come in: can you please follow @codesections ?

Heads up that (hopefully) @matrix is back up and alive again at last on shiny new infra... complete with crossposting to/from the birdsite?
