It’s cool to see all the new folks discovering Mastodon. Reminds me when I first discovered it. Welcome, everyone!
This new influx brought to us by @wilw@counter.social. 😁
Peeks in on Mastodon to see how things are going.
Choose an open standard instead of a closed one. Use an open source platform instead of a closed one. Don't vendor-lock. Build communities.
Buy responsibly farmed and sustainable food. Recycle. Don't buy fur. Don't buy products that test on animals.

I’ve been evaluating both Mattermost and Zulip as open source community chat alternatives. So far, I really like the community and approach to Zulip, but it has some failings that Mattermost shines in, namely familiar UX and privacy, but the activity and responsiveness of the Zulip community excite me. It’s difficult to choose. Does anyone have experience with either?

This Google Doc phishing scam is a big deal. Make sure you let friends & family know. https://www.reddit.com/r/google/comments/692cr4/new_google_docs_phishing_scam_almost_undetectable/
@ramsey Wouldn't there be some sort of nifty device provisioning thing, so you can create a new key for a new device instead of moving private keys around?
I’d love to have a Keybase app on my phone for encrypted chat, files, etc., but then that would require putting my private key on my phone.
Just updated @translator (translator@toot.works) with a new feature! It can now be used to translate existing statuses.
To translate a status, reply to it* with "@translator [language_code]". @translator should then reply with the translation.
* Probably want to set the visibility on this to "Direct"
* Make sure to use translator@toot.works as opposed to the @translator on your local instance
* List of language codes and additional instructions here: https://goo.gl/t8h2YS
I just developed Mastodon Stats, a site that shows the statistics of all instances mastodon gathered in real time. Have a look at https://mastodonstat.herokuapp.com

It's definitely a mistake to compare Mastodon to Twitter. Its survival will depend on providing something different rather than similar. And I've got the feeling so far that it's going in the right direction 😊
This morning, I was back over on Google+, and it got me thinking about the absolute stall in innovation there and the questionable directions they are taking with what was, at one point, a really interesting network.
Then I think about here and all the unrestricted innovation that is possible, all the creativity being unlocked, and, well, it just made me happy.
It will be interesting to see how individual Mastodon instances deal with the AGPL requirements for releasing their modifications to the source code under the same terms. As folks unfamiliar with OSS and the AGPL discover Mastodon and begin finding themselves at odds with the philosophy of the license, there could be interesting legal repercussions. I wonder if @Gargron has given any thought to this and what he’s prepared to do if someone violates the terms.
But someone, somewhere is probably working on a hosting plan to let anyone spin up their own hosted Mastodon instances for a monthly fee.
So much potential with Mastodon! I am itching to run several instances for different communities, but time and money are limiting factors.
Is there a mechanism to show non-admins the list of instances blacklisted from federation?
I'd love to find a Mastodon instance that is purely rated G. Anyone? I want a safe place for my son to type out his fun facts. He can give fun facts for hours on end about history and science. It gives me headaches for a couple hours of that so I figured this would be a good place for him to release his knowledge.
