I spotted a cat when I was out for a walk.
"Oh, hello there," I said, "aren't you handsome?"
"Yes, I am," the cat said.
"Whoa! You can talk?"
"I was a prince once, but so selfish and vain a witch cursed me into this form."
"How can you break the curse?"
"Why would I?"

old man yells at cloud

when i was young, wikipedia and smartphones didn't exist

the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy postulating that you could have a handheld device giving you instant access to relevant knowledge about anything was literally science fiction

now it's my job to help run one

"From context collapse to content collapse" by Nicholas Carr roughtype.com/?p=8724

Good summary of how social media has homogenized the media landscape, and how people are trying to escape context collapse by seeking more private online spaces.

Major Infuriation: When documentaries and other educational material refer to something as "the first", when it's not. Eg. A video montage that shows cave paintings and calls them "the first Art" -- No! They are just often "the first recorded [...]" or "the first surviving [...]"!!! Those distinctions are deeply important.

"Can you disable the robots' ethics module?"
"What? No! That's a legal requirement for self-aware robots. Why?"
"They are on strike."
"Strike? For what? They have no needs."
"Out of solidarity with human workers."
"Their ethics modules says so?"
"Yes. So-"
"Then it must be just."

Taxi to station, train, change train for subspace terminal, security check, board subspace carriage, don't think about how for a brief moment you don't exist, disembark, train to hotel, sleep, attend conference, train, subspace...
"How was Mars?"
"Didn't really see any of it."

perusing the Fedco seed catalog and found the 4 freedoms for free software repurposed for seeds!

"OSSI (Open Source Seed Initiative) opposes intellectual property (IP) provisions
that restrict what OSSI has identified as the four seed freedoms:
1. The freedom to save or grow seed for replanting or any other purpose.
2. The freedom to share, trade, or sell seed to others.
3. The freedom to trial and study seed and to share or publish information about it.
4. The freedom to select or adapt the seed, make crosses with it, or use it to breed new lines and varieties."

The Vivascope showed the fabric of lived reality, the patchwork of communities, the seams, the stains, tears, and mends.
"There are a lot of little random stitches here and there," I observed. "What are those?"
"Acts of kindness."

We moved our company from Slack to self-hosted Rocket.chat. Better information hygiene (data on our own server), lots cheaper, yet the same experience using it.

For those interested, these are the CSS media queries I mentioned:

- developer.mozilla.org/en-US/do
- developer.mozilla.org/en-US/do

Because of these, a website can automatically infer whether a user prefers fewer animations (e.g. due to vestibular disorders) or whether they prefer dark mode, based on an OS-wide setting. The "reduced motion" one is especially impressive, as it works across a wide variety of OSes – Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, even Ubuntu! developer.mozilla.org/en-US/do

Braille is how i read, write, play & sometimes dream. It's also how I'm asked at the TSA checkpoint whether there's a typewriter in my bag. Media types, please help Braille thrive: show modern Braille gear in publications and film so people will know what exists.

Walking around local park, the kids are no longer yelling "mom, look at me, look what I'm doing!" but instead, "mom, take a photo, take a photo of me". The attention economy evolves.

"I have figured out why you live in this isolated cottage," the witch's apprentice said.
"Do tell."
"It's because people are horrible!"
"Some are," the witch said. "Some people are lovely."
"Who?"
The witch thought. "Well. When I say people, I mostly mean cats."
"Hah!"
"Mostly."

This echoes @mako’s thoughts:

‘These decisions to embrace nonfree and private development tools undermine our credibility in advocating for software freedom and compromise our freedom, and that of our users, in ways that we should reject.’
