I now have a mobile phone running Ubuntu Touch! How geeky is that?

I am not really a un*x bod so there's quite a learning curve to develop for it...

If you think 'gold' is real money... fine... but you'd better have the yellow metal in your hands... because if you just have a bit of paper claiming to represent a bit of gold then you *dont* hold gold at all...

I have been working on a dedicated privacy app(/device) concept...

It needs a camera a display and to run a decent javascript enabled browser.

It must also have no wireless connectivity.

I was thinking the easiest solution would be old mobile phones with their gsm, wifi and bluetooth 'extracted...'.

Your daily reminder that there is no such thing as:

- data rights
- digital rights

There are only human rights.

(Which we must protect in the context of a digital and networked age.)

Folks pushing the former usually want your “new” rights to be lesser than your “old” ones.

@pperrin Well dead, not immediately. But it will become dangerous to host instances. Some will move underground or out of #EU. Probably a lot of cat&mouse stuff going on for a long time. It will probably hinder mass-adoption.
But maybe I'm wrong, and is federating lots of small instances just the way for escaping #art13

Is mastodon now dead in the EU?

Unless it can screen all uploaded content for commercial material surely it won't be compliant with the new EU 'all your internet belong to us' seizure of the internet laws ( and )

I got two free months of kindle unlimited :).

I don't have much time to read, but do listen...

So I added a plugin 'read aloud' to chrome, which (by chance) reads the books from the kindle cloud pretty well - and the page 'syncing' is fine too.

The AGW doomsday cult (or whatever they are calling themselves now) keep pushing their 'predictions' further into the future... I wonder why?

Fired up my several year old £120 3D printer to do some prototyping - not used it for ages...

It has to be the coolest gadget I have ever had(!). But... it would be nothing without all the great free 3d utility software out there!

It was cheap cos it was a kit... but I am pretty handy and made sure it went together quite precisely!

I’ll be live on Al Jazeera at 10:30 GMT to talk about single points of failure in surveillance capitalism and how the UK’s “competition rules” for Facebook, etc., that would further legitimise the concept that you are/your data is property are the wrong approach.

Watch live online at aljazeera.com/live/

Anyone else use www.clipular.com? Seems to have gone down (for good?)

I'd have appreciated the opportunity to download all the stuff I had there :(

enjoy this Russian meme that I think basically translates to “sight of cat, grace of potat”, every time I look at it it gets a bit funnier

"i use linux as my operating system," i state proudly to the unkempt, bearded man. he swivels around in his desk chair with a devilish gleam in his eyes, ready to mansplain with extreme precision.
"actually," he says with a grin, "linux is just the kernel. you use GNU+linux."
i don't miss a beat and reply with a smirk, "i use alpine, a distro that doesn't include the GNU coreutils, or any other GNU code. it's linux, but it's not GNU+linux."

the smile quickly drops from the man's face. his body begins convulsing and he foams at the mouth as he drop to the floor with a sickly thud. as he writhes around he screams "I-IT WAS COMPILED WITH GCC! THAT MEANS IT'S STILL GNU!"
coolly, i reply "if windows was compiled with gcc, would that make it GNU?" i interrupt his response with "and work is being made on the kernel to make it more compiler-agnostic. even if you were correct, you won't be for long."

with a sickly wheeze, the last of the man's life is ejected from his body. he lies on the floor, cold and limp. i've womansplained him to death.

A really good read... which answers it's own original question if it only realised it...

To the 'layman' who asks 'what is RSS?' what do you say?

I'd say "it is an open source (free) way of turning any web resource into something like a twitter stream, for people to follow..."

RSS is about to come of age...

Been reading some of Stephan Wolfram's 'A New Kind of Science'...

The approach he uses pretty much nailed why 'climate science' is bogus before it was even a thing...

For the past month I've been looking into smart contracts and now dapps... wow! How did I miss this stuff till now??

@pperrin @aral unfortunately I think 1 is unenforceable even so, as it can be easily circumvented by an invented feature (that nobody asked for) which "needs" that data.

And 2 looks like it will end up banning stuff like "aggregating locations to calculate traffic congestion“, which can be done ethically but requires anonymous but unencrypted location data.

You can allow anonymous uses but then you're opening an elephant-sized loophole.
