The concept of blockchains is just a specific composition of a few basic building box for systems.

The most clever thing about is that it solved the usual challenges of distributed systems by being intentionally slow instead of being complex and smart.

Blockchain by itself is just a datastructure.

When combined with Proof of Work is when it really gets innovative and useful, because it allows decentralized consensus between untrusted parties.

The slowness isn't even relevant for it to work, it's relevant to allow different parties from all around the world to participate without being disavantaged by latency.
