If your company really doesn't engage in unfair employment practices, there's no point in adding a stupid whitelist (ahem) like "m/f/d" to your job description. It doesn't make you any more inclusive, it just makes you look like that.

If you really want to improve the status quo, work on your interview and candidate selection process. Make it transparent and specify clear selection criteria. Strip data like nationality, age, gender etc. from the CV as early as possible in the application phase.

If I would start my own social media platform, I would design it so that the feed algorithm changes hourly. Then I would bathe in the tears of influencers trying to maximize their content for engagement.

Just saw a bullshit headline claiming Disney lost $600M on the Black Widow film due to piracy. The BS napkin math on this is that it was downloaded 20 million times. Then the article declared that each download is somehow a lost Disney+ subscription with $30.

This is obviously ridiculous logic. There's no evidence that a pirated show would have been purchased if not downloaded, let alone that a platform subscription would have happened. Nor do we even know that 20 million downloads represents 20 million individuals.

This isn't a matter of technical ignorance. These facts aren't hard to understand. They're intentionally misrepresented to benefit rich companies that want penalty payments in lawsuits. What utter hogwash.

Recently I've been learning how to build a desktop application in + .

Have to say Dart as a programming language feels like the best parts of Java and JavaScript combined.

Building UI declaratively doesn't feel too bad either after spending years with functional React.

Find the 20 most frequently changing files in your project like so:

git log --name-only --pretty="format:" | sed '/^\s*$/'d | sort | uniq -c | sort -r | head -n 20

Next, run each file through a static analyzer and sort the files with the lowest code health as first.

These are your hotspots—the high-interest parts of the codebase where technical debt is most expensive unless paid back. Fix them next.

So lovely to see folks already signing the web0 manifesto!

I guess it’s time for me to relax and enjoy the rest of my mulled wine.

Cheers + Happy New Year! 🎈💕

In 2022, I aim to write more blog posts. I've chosen HEY as my long-form publishing platform because sending email to "the world" is what blogging should have been from day one.

I will copy these to my static Gatsby blog later, too. Meanwhile, if you like, subscribe to my HEY posts via email or grab the RSS feed from the link above.

Once upon a time, two software companies were competing in the same business domain. The first one has been out of business for a while now. The latter one thrives.

New year? What, did you hit your head and pass out? You should know perfectly well that today is Friday, March 670th of 2020. There's nothing new in this.

Keeping warm by going through Elena Chernyshova's photos of the arctic city of Norilsk, which is in darkness for 45 days a year.

On the other hand, The Night Before (2015) was quite amusing as a manic drug-filled buddy movie set on Christmas. Can recommend.

For the very first time, I watched the Star Wars Holiday Special (1978).

Safe to say, this will not become one of my Christmas traditions despite its charming weirdness.

The image of a Wookie eyeing Han Solo lustfully will haunt me.

“Checking my Mastodon feed lately causes me to yawn. I’m bored by the Fuck Google And Twitter statements—please stop distributing useless messages on platforms where people already fucked Google and Twitter. Yes, Go is awesome and Linux For The Win, yadda yadda. Yes, everyone should get their COVID jab. Dear God, make it stop. Should I start a de-follow frenzy? Compared to Twitter, Mastodon is already so very tiny. I’m sure I’m still missing out on interesting non-tech savvy people to follow, but it’s hard to deny the homogeneity of the population there.”

Merry Christmas! Santa dropped in last night and left a mysterious note to all of you. 🎅
