I am a father of three youngish children, and web app developer for a credit union. I used to work as an engineer in solar energy research, and before that designing rocket launch structures. I live in the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina, trying to make our home more self sufficient.

Hello Fediverse!

We are KiCad, a cross platform and open source electronics design automation suite. We can help you make printed circuit boards.

Quitting gmail

You can just ghost gmail without closing your account.

1. You'll need a new email address. Maybe your ISP provides one? A friend with a domain name? Proton mail?

2. Set google to forward everything to your new address.

3. Set an autoreply saying what your new address is.

4. As it becomes relevant, unsubscribe from email lists and then resubscribe with your new address.

5. Move your accounts to also use your new address. Go at whatever pace works for you.

When you're in a dystopic society but you're just resigned to it, that's Ohwellian.

If your function to draw on a HTML canvas element mysteriously stops drawing anything at all, make sure you did not change the stroke color to white... when you have a white background.

A reminder that Mastodon and the Fediverse do NOT use cryptocurrency, blockchains, NFTs, tokens, coins, mining, web3 or anything like that.

Masto and the Fedi run on traditional servers and use a sustainable network federation model somewhat similar to e-mail (that's why Fediverse addresses look similar to e-mail addresses).

Also a reminder there are no venture capital firms or other investors either. No one owns the network, each server is independent. Masto and Fedi server running costs are paid by their owners, sometimes with donations from users.

No one is getting rich from the Fediverse, it is all volunteers with some getting donations and a few getting modest grants from foundations. Please remember this when you interact with admins or developers.

(There might be some individual users who post about cryptocurrency/blockchain, but the infrastructure this place runs on doesn't use it at all.)

Tl:dr - Decentralisation does NOT mean cryptocurrency/blockchain

why the FUCK do engineering organizations put standards documents behind a $270 fee? you are literally trying to make it harder to use your standard, it defeats the fucking point

Imagine #libraries don't exist, but there's this person who thought of them and is trying to convince everyone else about them.

-Borrow books for free? People are going to steal them!
-You can just come in to use a computer? Well that's just going to be abused by freeloaders.
-Staff? Who is going to pay them? Why should my taxes be wasted subsidising access to books for people who haven't saved and bought their own?

How many amazing things do we dismiss? What is our society missing out on?

This has a lot of useful phrases to keep things cordial when other people inspire harsher words. howtoprofessionallysay.akashra

This Mastodon instance is for people interested in technology. Discussions aren't limited to technology, because tech folks shouldn't be limited to technology either!
