Pinned toot

Hello world!

Arrived here from that blue bird site since I’m trying to replace things with FOSS alternatives. Plus ActivityPub sounds cool.

I’m interested in anything web/mobile/functional/security related, things you’d find on lobste.rs etc. Elixir is something I use daily. Recommendations for follows welcome!

Looks like Heroku Postgres is currently being hit by a botnet attempting default credentials.

One of our apps has seen ~8k attempts over the past hour with ~1.3k unique IPs.

IPs seem to be a mixture of AWS/DigitalOcean/Linode. Most attempts are not over SSL, we’ve seen some though.

Anyone else?

hate speech, activitypub, preaching to choir

I have high hopes ActivityPub will solve hate speech on social media without harming free speech.

Instances encourage smaller groups of likeminded people and decentralisation makes them part of the whole conversation, avoiding echo chambers.

Maintainers can use mute/block instances to moderate what their users see (in the extreme case of abusive ones popping up) without wiping the content out altogether.

Don’t like how your instance is moderated? Run your own.

Mailchimp: interesting transformation. It’s hard to find one concrete answer to what they actually do on the new website, seems like they’re trying to do “everything marketing” at once.

I wonder if their business model will end up favouring plain advertising over content marketing in the long term.

Seeing some faint northern lights in Tallinn right now!

In my opinion Reply All, Startup and Giant Robots are some of the best tech podcasts out there. Give them a listen if you haven’t already.

What are some good smaller tech or design-related podcasts? Currently I mostly listen to what Radiotopia/Gimlet/Thoughtbot have to offer.

Has anyone tried using alternative DNS services like OpenNIC as their primary DNS?

I like the idea of a community-run service but I’m not sure how I feel about the “we also have new TLDs” thing.

@pbrisbin It’s good! Last week I installed LineageOS with microG as the Play Services replacement and the only app I’ve had to install outside of F-Droid is Slack.

The LineageOS experience is a little clunky compared to Google’s, but it’s not that important to me. Feels a little bit like switching from Windows/macOS to Linux. The OS is solid but the stock AOSP apps are a little lacking. Luckily they’re replaceable.

Is Tusky considered the Android app of choice around here?

Next thing I need to do is probably switching to GitLab...

I’d verify this account but my key size is too big to fit a signed message in this box, so I guess you’ll just have to take my word for it.
