@aetios heh, right, here's another nerdy thing: what about the shape of the crescent on various paintings? That's not how it looks in real life

@aetios @radonhawk Apparently, he just confused Mars and Moon. Forgivable for an amateur, but not for an astrophysics professor

@tennoseremel @drq I did not test it with DLCs (there's only one game which I have DLCs for, and I've installed it manually). Will do some testing a bit later

@tennoseremel @drq have you heard about Lutris? It integrates with GOG and provides UI for downloading, installing and launching. You still have to go to gog.com for purchasing though.

politics question p1

@raeaw @devurandom And that's not even considering the possibility that their not so friendly neighbors will try to invade their land and take all that little resources they have...

politics question p1

@raeaw @devurandom I think pure communist society is not likely to survive unless it takes over the (most of the) world - exactly because the domination of capitalism requires it to either become a part of global trade or struggle to produce everything they need on their own, which is close to impossible if the society itself and the land it occupies is not very large

politics question p1

@raeaw @devurandom yep, when some people gain power (by wealth or any other way) over the others, they become a "ruling class" of sorts. Off course, there are exceptions, for example, when a group self-organizes to do something together, they usually choose a leader whom they trust, and this person technically has some kind of power over the other members of the group, but that's fine so long as the leader knows their boundaries and does not cross them

politics question p1

@raeaw @devurandom um, well, I recall I've read something about Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong. Perhaps that's what small scale ancap society would finally become. It is certainly not the place I would like to live in :)
But large scale ancap seems unstable in nature, it tends to mutate into some kind of tyrannical state under the rule of "the most successful businessman".

politics question p1

@devurandom @raeaw And, all these coordinates actually boil down to various aspects of distribution of money and power - which is politics is all about. The author wants to say that the only adequate way to classify a political system is to determine who benefits from it and in which way. I kinda agree.
(2/2)

politics question p1

@devurandom @raeaw well, I actually like this video. What it's really about is that all these political coordinates and compasses use some theoretical invented measures which have very little connection to real world. In fact, no existing political system can be accurately described by these metrics.

politics question p1

@devurandom @raeaw thanks! Will watch a bit later, it's kinda long, my proletarian workday is not over yet ;-)

politics question p1

@raeaw @devurandom
/dev/urandom, could you share a link to this video? I guess the original author might have meant that no matter which ideas/ideals the political system is based upon and which goals does it declare, it must state clearly who will benefit from it the most (in material sense), otherwise it is just bullshit. Thus, the analysis based on material conditions is the most natural for political systems. It kind of makes sense.

politics question p1

@raeaw @devurandom I didn't say it's useless, it's just not strictly in the domain of politics. The political system may be based upon ethics or even some philosophy, but it itself ultimately just defines the distribution of goods.

Unfortunately, in most cases the creators of political systems do it backwards - they just imagine whatever distribution if resources they like, then make up a philosophy and/or bend the ethics to fit il.

politics question p1

@raeaw @devurandom politics is all about power, which mainly depends on access to material resources. So, the main question of politics is basically who controls the distribution of resources. All other questions are secondary to this one. IMO, off course
