@jtr May I suggest visually including the results of the grep commands. Also oddly this post was posted twice on Marston roughly 7 minutes apart.

FYI, there's also rgrep which uses find to recursively find files to grep. It can search entire directory trees for you and displays matches in a buffer to look through:

gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/

There's also the built-in project.el which can find files in a specific project and also grep through them. Useful when working with specific code repos. (NOTE: project.el is only in Emacs > 27)
