At a museum with the kid. There's a videogames exhibit, a humanoid robots exhibit, a playground... all the kids here are running around having fun.

And yet my kid would rather be here.

I have the suspicion my kid's gonna be an introvert...

In 1998, a programmer who had been working on Y2K fixes started to get anxious because he couldn't believe how pervasive the problem was. He switched from company to company trying to get away from it, but everywhere he went he became regarded as the Y2K expert and immediately became the team lead for that company's Y2K contingencies. He finally had a nervous breakdown, quit his job, and decided he wanted to be knocked unconscious when the Y2K actually came about.

A month before Y2K he was put into an artificial coma and cooled down to a near cryogenic easily sustained long term life support.

Unfortunately the life support notification system had a Y2K bug, and no one revived him for 8000 years.

Finally he was found and revived. He woke up, and saw himself surrounded by lots of glass, light, stainless steel, and tall beautiful people in white robes. He asked if he was in Heaven.

They replied, "No, this is Chicago. Actually but it's a lot like Heaven to someone like you."

"Someone like me?"

"You are from the 20th century. Many of the problems that existed in your lifetime have been solved for thousands of years. There is no hunger and no disease. There is no scarcity, or strife between races and creeds."

"What year is it now?"

"Yeah, about that - it's the year 9,998. You see, the year 10,000 is coming up, and we understand you know something called COBOL?"

Now is the time to ask the eternal question that mankind has struggled with since the dawn of consciousness: “what the fuck was I working on before the holiday break?”

If there's an international record for "Time between screaming IDONTWANNASLEEEEP and starting to snore", I think my kid just smashed it.

Also, I found this beauty in the attic.

An original IBM model M, which I had on our first computer, an IBM 286. It was second hand, and for some obscure reason the whole keyboard was in German... which I guess helped me learn where the punctuation keys were without looking at them!

CLICKETYCLACK!

Going through my old stuff at my parents', and found three seasons of Stargate on CD, at 1 or 2 episodes per disk.

And it'd take ~6 hours to download each episode. 🤦🏻‍♂️

God we have it easy nowadays

I've been building a Facebook Events style event organizing system for the Fediverse. It's based on the simple, open source, privacy-respecting event organizing tool gath.io

The attached video is a work-in-progress preview and shows compatibility with Mastodon. My hope is to get it working with lots of software, including stuff like Friendica that supports events and calendars.

I've been offered a free Google smart speaker thing. But I hate the surveillance capitalism that's the main driver behind it.

Does anyone know if this thing can be made useful without a connection to Google itself?

I need a shirt designed like a crappy pop-up cookie alert that says:

To improve my experience, I am eating cookies.

Does anyone have any links or resources on becoming a good people manager?

My manager asked me to consider switching from a full programming job to a programming + people manager role. And I am intrigued... but also pretty much panicking, because I know almost nothing about it.

Any help would be extremely appreciated
