@brion good question! I wonder if the implementation back in the days would care to ask for a previous disk until the start of the central directory record was found. 1.44 MB ought to be enough for any number of files! ;D
Makes me wonder if the multi-volume format was ever even an idea at the time the ZIP file format was designed. Or was there a good design reason the directory record would be at the end? Hard to imagine!
