Pinned post

Hi all! time:

I'm a former full-time musician who now works as a data analyst at a non-profit and teaches accordion lessons on the side.

I enjoy tinkering with old tech (retro computers, vintage stereos, 8-Track tapes/players, etc.) and trying to improve my electronics repair/troubleshooting skills. I dabble with & too.

Programmer since the 8-bit era. Big fan of , , and #6502 assembly.

Here's a before and after of a thrift-store Apple II I'm restoring!

Our website has been redesigned from the ground up--it looks nicer and explains better!

I've put together a survey about the Small Internet (#gopher, #gemini, individual webpages, small community sites) and I would love your input. If you are a small internet user, please spend a few minutes and fill in your thoughts. I'm especially interested in the open response questions. This will help inform an upcoming conference talk I'll be giving at

Also, please boost this on fedi as much as possible and feel free to re-share on other social networks and in other communities. The more responses the better.

I have no idea where this image came from, but I couldn't resist sharing it.

Finally replaced my trusty 10-year-old MacBook Pro with one of those shiny new M1 thingies. Figured I'd install on the old one, and it was... actually quite easy! 😮 I was really prepared for a struggle. Nice job, folks!

Found my old 80’s radio cassette player with built in walkman on top. So three cassette’s in total. Crazy #retro tech.

I can't move to the Fediverse properly until I reproduce my famous pinned post from the birdsite, so here it is:

P.S.A. To all vintage computer and video game collectors:

Go through your collections and GET THE DAMN BATTERIES OUT!

Now! Don't wait! Seriously, put down the phone, go to your collection and take out all the batteries. Right now! Even if they look "okay" they are NOT SAFE after this much time.

Since Mastodon is the elephant app, that makes all other social networks irrelephant.

A reminder that Mastodon and the Fediverse do NOT use cryptocurrency, blockchains, NFTs, tokens, coins, mining, web3 or anything like that.

Masto and the Fedi run on traditional servers and use a sustainable network federation model somewhat similar to e-mail (that's why Fediverse addresses look similar to e-mail addresses).

Also a reminder there are no venture capital firms or other investors either. No one owns the network, each server is independent. Masto and Fedi server running costs are paid by their owners, sometimes with donations from users.

No one is getting rich from the Fediverse, it is all volunteers with some getting donations and a few getting modest grants from foundations. Please remember this when you interact with admins or developers.

(There might be some individual users who post about cryptocurrency/blockchain, but the infrastructure this place runs on doesn't use it at all.)

Tl:dr - Decentralisation does NOT mean cryptocurrency/blockchain

When Margaret wants sink water she doesn’t meow or bother me or anything. Instead she does this, which is much more unsettling

Stablecoin is collapsing? How am I supposed to pay my horses now???

If you're planning to bring your Apple ARM-based laptop with incredible battery life to the local hipster coffee shop…

…make it the eMate 300.
