So here's my WebP workaround on Windows:
* open the .webp file in MS Paint
* save as .jpeg or .png as appropriate
I shit you not, this works, as MS Paint is able to use the system WebP codec to load the files.
I've been reminded also that squoosh.app can be very helpful for converting file types, as it can both read and write WebP and runs in a web browser, so works on any OS. :D
@brion “Works on any OS” is a bit broad for NPM, but yeah, it works on the 3 or 4 main modern platforms ;)
Great project, thanks for the link, allows me to easily compare e.g. AVIF, which is not that widespread currently.
And: Ceterum censeo JPEG esse delendam. We wouldn’t use BMP or uncompressed TIFF for websites any longer, right? Why are we still seeing JPEG everywhere?
