"Hypermodern Chess" is a painting by Steve Gildea (oil on canvas, 20" x 20").

in the 1980s and 90s, artist Steve Gildea painted a series called "Things I Would Miss on the Way to Mars". Each painting depicted a cherished object or experience from Earth, including #wine, #carnations, #books, #apples, and, of course, #chess.

In "Hypermodern Chess", two astronauts play a game in orbit over #Mars. Their pieces are floating away.

(The curator of @Chess is Steve Gildea's son. I often imagine that the players are actually me and my father, since the board and #Staunton pieces depicted are what we played with when I was a child and my father was teaching me.)

It never ceases to amaze me how many Hacker News comments are just people debating what they think the title of an article means, without reading the content.
