Saturday, August 25th, at 10:00 EDT (14:00 UTC) will enter a three-hour maintenance window to migrate our Rails app server and Sidekiq workers to use jemalloc, which will hopefully alleviate memory issues we've been experiencing.

Every effort will be made to keep the site from experiencing long periods of downtime, but there will be intermittent, occasional downtime from reboots and Docker container restarts. Your patience is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Wednesday, August 22, 19:00 EDT (23:00 UTC), will enter a one-hour maintenance window to upgrade the VM that the instance runs on. Here's what to expect:

- If all goes according to plan, 10–20 minutes of downtime.
- There will be 10–15 minutes of uptime while we test.
- If something goes wrong, there will be 10–20 minutes additional downtime while we revert server upgrades.

Thank you for your patience.

Sometimes I wonder how Optional would work in Swift if conditional conformance would have been there from much earlier.
It feels like there are so many places where the compiler treats them in a special way that could now be solved with conditional conformance.

Oh, so I'm starting to collect a list of people who might be interested in a native Mac tootclient...

Feel free to toot'n'boost this.

Did you know that you don't need to use link shorteners (, etc.) on Mastodon? All links, no matter how long, only count for 23 characters against your 500 limit!

(And since link shorteners are bad for user experience and break the web, there's almost no good reason to use 'em! 😄)

So, Group FaceTime won’t make it into the initial iOS 12 release...

I fixed the "follow all" error on, sorry for the trouble

My only gripe so far with @tootdon is the timeline jumping to top on refresh, instead of showing new toots from the point I left. But I like the UX/UI, more than others clients. (Well, the only other I really tried is Amaroq, it's also good, but the look and feel isn't to my taste)

Shout out to the survivors who made it on here

@ashfurrow Thanks for updating the instance. And indeed, filters did show up in settings now! 🙂
However, there is still no "Invite People" section. Any idea why?

weekend maintenance

I'm planning to upgrade this Mastodon instance on the weekend. Maintenance window is:

Saturday, beginning at 10:00am EDT (14:00 UTC) for three hours.

Likely won't take the whole three hours. Hopefully. I'll keep everyone updated.

Is there anything that imports Twitter lists into Mastodon?

Mastodon seems nice. Just the fact that there are multiple instances makes it a little strange. E.g. why do I have to create a separate account on each instance? Why can't I just "transfer" accounts? And followers are also only on one instance - even though they can be cross-instance?

@ashfurrow as a newbie to Mastodon: Is this instance behind There are some more settings on than there are here (invite, filters).

Mastodon for Tech Folks

This Mastodon instance is for people interested in technology. Discussions aren't limited to technology, because tech folks shouldn't be limited to technology either!
