It is ok for developers to charge for their work.
Paying people for their work is a much more ethical model than trackers and ads.
In case you missed it, there's a privacy-friendly alternative to Google Play.
It's called F-Droid and only includes free open apps that don't track you:
The installation process is slightly complicated, but once it's been installed it's extremely easy to use.

OK friends of free and open/libre Android apps: My repo now also shows screenshots in the web browser, if there are any (and you use the web frontend). Should affect about any 2nd app. Enjoy!
