Thanks. @fdroidorg inclusion requests have exposed a number of "open source" Android apps as having non-free dependencies and spyware bundled with them. It seems like the #JitsiMeet app is in that category. It would be great to see app developers acknowledging those issues and working on them, instead of seeing it as the community's job ;)

I would pay for an reproducible testcase of the "vanishing toots" bug #tuskydev #tusky
I can reproduce it with deleted statuses (will fix for Tusky 7) but apparently it also happens with non-deleted statuses.

To make "change the app" more clear: Riot had to change its package name in order to be able to sign the app with a new certificate. This results in a new app entry in Google Play.

@fdroidorg could theoretically keep the original package name with upcoming versions, but this would introduce a maintenance overhead on the already overloaded F-Droid maintainers. Therefore, F-Droid aims to be as close to upstream as possible which means in this case switching to the new package name, too.

Heads up to all users: with the recent attack on @matrix' infrastructure, it's possible that Riot's Google Play version got compromised. This doesn't affect Riot's F-Droid version. Just as Riot started to do now, F-Droid has always signed all its apps on an inaccessible, offline machine. For more information, see riot.im/reinstall

To avoid maintenance overhead, however, it's likely to happen that F-Droid users must also change the app in near future. Still, there's no need to act now.

search.f-droid.org/ has been quite slow recently. As a workaround we''ve now added a caching proxy.

So for common search terms performance should be improving as the cache warms up.

Icons are still loaded from main f-droid.org, which is perpetually overloaded. (But harder to fix. :-/)

If you enjoy using apps from @fdroidorg you might want to try the alternative client G-Droid:

@gdroid

G-Droid is F-Droid but with a more discovery-oriented interface. (For example, they've just added a "recently commented" panel, so you can see what people are talking about.)

You can download G-Droid from F-Droid itself.

(If you're new to F-Droid, here's a beginner's guide to installing it: switching.social/ethical-alter)

@__h2__ offered a 50€ bounty for proper Android TV support.

If that's of any interest to you, maybe you want to add to that bounty. Or maybe you want to implement the missing bits.

The latest version of G-Droid shows the apps that recently received a comment on a new panel. A nice way to make your favourite app a bit more visible to other users.

You don't have to use Google Play on your Android phone.

There's a free open alternative app store called F-Droid, which is much more privacy-friendly, and which you can install yourself relatively easily.

There's a simple instruction guide for beginners on switching.social:

Fun fact:

The instance social.masto.host is indirectly funded by LineageOS + F-Droid.

Earlier, I was replacing my phone every 2 years with a new version of the same series. But last year, when my phone was ready for replacement (too slow, no Android updates), I flashed LineageOS + F-Droid on it instead.

I saved € 187.5 by not buying a new phone. This instance costs € 5 per month.

P.S. I know the exact cost because I bought one for a family member.

F-Droid will soon have stricter requirements for apps showing up in the "Latest" tab in the F-Droid app:

news.f-droid.org/posts/2019-03

If you are an app developer consider adding good descriptions, screenshots and a "Whats's New" section for your app.

If you notice that your favourite app doesn't fulfill all these requirements consider notifying the app's developers or just help them with a merge request adding the missing info to the source repo.

Any hints on how to reproduce the crashes in #Tusky v6.0 are highly appreciated. #tuskydev

The current version of G-Droid indicates in a small green text from/to what version an updateable app can be updated. The next version will offer ALL old versions of an app, just as it is in the F-Droid app as well.
