Okay, so I've just moved email for danielmoch.com off of Google Apps. I'm not self-hosting the receiving node and using sendgrid.net as an outgoing relay. The only downside is that I'm limited to 100 outgoing emails per day outgoing on the free plan.
This is the only free way I've found to locally host my emails without using Google Apps. If I ever have reason to go beyond 100 emails per day, I'll throw up a server on DigitalOcean.
