Is there a reason why you try to figure out which shell you're using by _trial and error_‽
Why don't you just do:

$ ps -p $$

It's much faster and more precise.

@cinnabarowl No particular reason to do it the way I did it. Obviously, I could check the running processes. Or I could echo $SHELL. I could run the chsh command if it was available too. But simply typing the shell names out was a way for me to, not just figure out what the default shell was, but see whether those shells were installed or not.
