Today I used lynx to access a gopher server. If any of you know what I'm talking about you're either old or you know your tech history.

It's been a while. After an initial burst of NuStuff enthusiasm, I let my presence on this instance lapse.

To my own detriment, of course. Everything I saw that pulled me here in the first place is still in effect, and with more force every day.

I really need to let go of the ego trip that is Birdsite, and make better use of this.

It's easy to laugh at this image, but for an older generation of nerds it was sort of true. The online world was sparse, its population highly self-selected. Yes, we also learned earlier than anyone else that it risked a new kind of exposure to total strangers, but we acclimated. This was our strange hole in the world, and we developed a new culture there.

Ok, nerds. Letting my ass hang out and asking a really basic question here.

This week I'm going to Drupalcon. I'll probably have to do some real work while there, which means I need to execute essential data hygiene.

What are the steps? Do I need a VPN? Why? What protects me between the laptop and the conference wifi routers? Isn't HTTPS sufficient? What about things I may need to access that are IP-restricted? Etc.

Infosec dolt here. Please assist.

Citizen! You may, unknown to yourself, suffer from the indelible stain of Privilege. You cannot feel it, and by possessing it you are paradoxically almost certain to be entirely unaware of it, even though it hangs about you like malodorous moss, vile and visible to all around you.

The only way to be sure, is to check yourself in to a licensed Privilege Assessment Center, where one of our specially-trained staff will let you know if you have it, and what your (limited) options are.

Do it today!

Yeah, 500 characters is going to do wonderful things for creepy microfiction :)

51,000 users on mastodon.social makes for a very active, and ultimately rather useless, local timeline. And it goes in weird spurts as different groups discover it. I think I may indeed have to make my move here permanent.

Ah, the joy of mute. That guy is a fucking spam engine.

Spinoff of @datawench. Might migrate. Not sure yet.
