Tech Question, Home Server

Hey, I'm thinking of buying a ~$200 little fanless PC to run as an anyways on home server. Anything in particular I should know about specs or requirements?

I'm pretty much looking for something that can host a Mastodon / Minecraft / etc server so I can keep them running without letting my PC go 24/7.

Thanks!

Tech Question, Home Server

@Wayril I've been running an I bought four years ago pretty much non-stop, 24/7, and it's still going strong. Gets a tad sluggish now and then, but it is getting a little old now (spinning hard drive could use replacing).

But it was in the region of $200 at the time, a modern one would be even more performant, and I have nothing but good things to say about it (in fact I may be emotionally attached to it at this point πŸ˜…). It's tiny too!

@kezzbracey@linuxrocks.online that would be the dream, but I won't hold my breath... πŸ˜…

@kezzbracey@linuxrocks.online I have to agree with you there - I'll take a Reynolds novel over any of the supposed modern titans. They seem so bogged down in the tech/science they miss the world building. I want to live in the RS universe (despite the...obvious downsides...)

One last recommendation 😁:

kobo.com/us/en/ebook/echopraxi

A tough read (the guy is clearly an order of magnitude more intelligent than I am), but damn I was hooked in the same way I was with Reynolds πŸ™ƒ

@kezzbracey@linuxrocks.online Alastair Reynolds FTW πŸ˜‰ I've never found Revelation Space under , but:

tachyonpublications.com/produc (I think this is DRM free, I'm on mobile, please check, I have a copy in my library, so it's available _somewhere_)

kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-iron- (The Iron Tactician is my second favourite Merlin story after "Merlin's Gun")

πŸ™ƒ

The quintessential Hacker News thread (sibling comments no less):

* keep your bedroom door open to reduce CO2 build up
* keep your bedroom closed in case of fire

Although, closeyourdoor.org _is_ something I wasn't aware of before now... πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

@libreture now the problem is "which one first?" πŸ€”πŸ˜„

The latest Storybundle
is The Warp Speed Ahead Adventure SF Bundle, curated by Kevin J. Anderson.

A huge bundle of 14 DRM-free science fiction e-books.

I'm particularly interested in The Refugee by C.A. Hartman and Blue Sky Tomorrows by L.J. Hachmeister. They look awesome!

Each book in multiple formats for all your devices.

OK, so I can't sync my files, calendars, contacts, my todo list, access my bookmarks, or my gitlab server - definitely time for HA πŸ˜…

After debating whether to set up a HA environment on for weeks, and deciding against it, my droplet just went down and won't come back up πŸ˜…

commit; push; test; build; tag; deploy dev; scan for CVEs; push to staging; deploy to staging...

Next up: deploy to production and integration

I love and 😊

@kev IIRC, this was intentional. The generally preferred approach, I _think_, is to persist in the message tray. Rhythmbox does this for example. But I have the same problem with , so I use TopIcons, which works well for me (I've been through the disappearing act too):

extensions.gnome.org/extension

@andrioid I may be something of a masochist for saying this, but I enjoy dealing with the low-level details of πŸ™ƒ different details crop up at almost every level of a given stack

@gaab what's backing the minio storage? πŸ€” cloud or local disks? πŸ™ƒ

@pixelfed I've got no skin in this game (but I'm rooting for )

But could we call them "Friend Groups" or something? πŸ˜… basically anything but Circles. Even Circles of Friends (since I assume that was the original idea of the model) - basically I can't imagine explaining Circles to my parents, but I can imagine "Friend Groups" πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ
