Tech Question, Home Server
Hey, I'm thinking of buying a ~$200 little fanless PC to run as an anyways on home server. Anything in particular I should know about specs or requirements?
I'm pretty much looking for something that can host a Mastodon / Minecraft / etc server so I can keep them running without letting my PC go 24/7.
Tech Question, Home Server
@Wayril I've been running an #Intel #NUC I bought four years ago pretty much non-stop, 24/7, and it's still going strong. Gets a tad sluggish now and then, but it is getting a little old now (spinning hard drive could use replacing).
But it was in the region of $200 at the time, a modern one would be even more performant, and I have nothing but good things to say about it (in fact I may be emotionally attached to it at this point 😅). It's tiny too!
@email@example.com that would be the dream, but I won't hold my breath... #RevelationSpaceTheMovie 😅
@firstname.lastname@example.org I have to agree with you there - I'll take a Reynolds novel over any of the supposed modern titans. They seem so bogged down in the tech/science they miss the world building. I want to live in the RS universe (despite the...obvious downsides...)
One last recommendation 😁:
A tough read (the guy is clearly an order of magnitude more intelligent than I am), but damn I was hooked in the same way I was with Reynolds 🙃
@email@example.com Alastair Reynolds FTW 😉 I've never found Revelation Space under #drmfree, but:
https://tachyonpublications.com/product/slow-bullets/ (I think this is DRM free, I'm on mobile, please check, I have a copy in my library, so it's available _somewhere_)
https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-iron-tactician (The Iron Tactician is my second favourite Merlin story after "Merlin's Gun")
The quintessential Hacker News thread (sibling comments no less):
* keep your bedroom door open to reduce CO2 build up
* keep your bedroom closed in case of fire
Although, https://closeyourdoor.org _is_ something I wasn't aware of before now... 🤷🏻♂️
@libreture now the problem is "which one first?" 🤔😄
The latest Storybundle
is The Warp Speed Ahead Adventure SF Bundle, curated by Kevin J. Anderson.
A huge bundle of 14 DRM-free science fiction e-books.
I'm particularly interested in The Refugee by C.A. Hartman and Blue Sky Tomorrows by L.J. Hachmeister. They look awesome!
Each book in multiple formats for all your devices.
(Now that the #DigitalOcean droplet is back up...)
OK, so I can't sync my files, calendars, contacts, my todo list, access my bookmarks, or my gitlab server - definitely time for HA 😅
After debating whether to set up a HA environment on #DigitalOcean for weeks, and deciding against it, my droplet just went down and won't come back up 😅
@kev IIRC, this was intentional. The generally preferred approach, I _think_, is to persist in the #gnome message tray. Rhythmbox does this for example. But I have the same problem with #nextcloud, so I use TopIcons, which works well for me (I've been through the disappearing act too):
@gaab what's backing the minio storage? 🤔 cloud or local disks? 🙃
Digital Ocean Spaces, Minio, Rackspace and Wasabi will be supported as well!
But could we call them "Friend Groups" or something? 😅 basically anything but Circles. Even Circles of Friends (since I assume that was the original idea of the model) - basically I can't imagine explaining Circles to my parents, but I can imagine "Friend Groups" 🤷🏻♂️
