The real story in the Pepsi protest ad controversy (http://wapo.st/2nXHry4), to me anyway, is how Pepsi has always tried to position itself as the "counter-cultural" soda. In "The Attention Merchants," Tim Wu talks about how Pepsi ran ads in the 60's featuring hippies, with the slogan "you're in the Pepsi Generation." Then in the 80's there were the Micheal Jackson ads, back when he was still a bit controversial as MTV's first black artist. New decade, same strategy.
What nobody told you about the tech bubble: as the pressure rises to pay back investors on the millions they pumped in, the strategy shifts from: "haha try our hip social networking app, teens! yolo harambe dog filters" to "haha hey you're hip, don't you want to shop at the Gap Old Navy Forever 21 please click all these ads also we've learned your underwear size through tracking"
What's all the fuzz about the 90s kids? I only remember my very weird haircuts!
