Oh wow, Microsoft is buying GitHub. What do we do?
@bugaevc
Check out GitLab instead I guess. Tis but a rumor for now at least
@trevdev GitLab is awesome, we use it at work, GNOME has migrated to it and FreeDesktop is in process of migration, but most people/projects won't be bothered enough to migrate. Migration might be a solution for each individual, but not for the problem as a whole.
We'll end up with *millions* of open source, free software projects hosted on Microsoft's service, on Microsoft's infrastructure. I'm not a Microsoft hater, but I'm uncomfortable with the idea of that happening.
@nipos sure, even Windows isn't that bad; but Microsoft has a history of questionable decisions (like forcing #Win10 update down everyone's throat), and a reputation in the free software community. I don't hate Microsoft (and I have personally used their products in the past), but I would have to see such an important community to *rely* on them, to be at their discretion.
A better alternative would be to migrate to self-hosted/federated services, like GitLab and git-SSB.
