Someone said "is that still a thing?" when I announced I was on Mastodon. Is it?
Boost this so we actually get a few votes maybe? How far can it go?

"There is an obvious difference between George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, who founded our union, and, say, Jefferson Davis and Stonewall Jackson, who tried to destroy it. The fact that Washington, Jefferson and other early presidents owned slaves should temper our admiration for them but not erase it entirely. They gave us a nation grotesquely disfigured by slavery, but they also gave us the constitutional tools... with which to heal that original, near-fatal flaw."

Yes call me a nerd, geek or whatever, but this is so much fun! I know there are more Tree of Life's out there, but this one is the greatest IMO.

Interactively zoom in and out of all #life on #Earth.

lifemap.univ-lyon1.fr/

I advise to view the one for the general public:

"Tree simplified from #NCBI taxonomy

~800,000 species

This 'large public' tree is a reduction of the whole NCBI #taxonomy. It only shows #species (no strains, environmental samples, unidentified species, etc.). It displays a description and picture retrieved from Wikipedia when clicking on the tips and nodes."

The other one is also great, but more for the professional:

"Complete NCBI taxonomy

~1.4 Million species
The NCBI taxonomic tree represents the relationships between all species/strains that have at least one sequence in the NCBI/Entrez database. It is curated and validated by expert taxonomists and is updated regularly. "

It even has a mobile app.

"A factor that convinced Facebook’s security team that this was appropriate, sources said, was that there was an upcoming release of Tails where the vulnerable code had been removed. Effectively, this put an expiration date on the exploit, according to two sources with knowledge of the tool."

I've heard rumours that the Internet Archive are at risk of being sued out of existence by the copyright mafia for running the National Emergency Library during lockdown.

Archive.org does essential work. Eg the Wayback Machine is one of the few tools that prevents the web being one giant Ministry of Truth, where powerful elites can use copyright and other tools of legalized censorship to rewrite history. Please support them with activism or donations.

"A veto-proof majority of the #Minneapolis city council has announced its intent to dismantle the city’s police department and invest in community-led public safety, a move that would mark the first concrete victory in the mounting nationwide movement to defund law enforcement agencies in the aftermath of the police killing of George Floyd."
