Google’s video chat merger begins: Now there are two “Google Meet” apps

"Google has a help article detailing this extremely confusing situation, calling the two Meet apps "Google Meet (original): The updated Meet app" and "Google Meet: The updated Duo app." The "Google Meet (original)" app will someday be put out to pasture; it's just sticking around while Google rebuilds the meeting functionality on top of Google Duo. Did everyone follow that?"

Oh no!

"GitLab U-turns on deleting dormant projects after backlash"

If we called it “applied statistics” instead of “machine learning” or “artificial intelligence” we’d probably get fewer people asking if the computer is alive.

Amazon's carbon footprint spread 18% in 2021

"The company blamed COVID-19 on the shift, saying it had scaled its business at an unprecedented pace during the last two years to sell more stuff to customers during the pandemic. From early 2020 to the end of 2021, Amazon claims it doubled the size of its fulfilment network, and creating more than 750,000 full-time and part-time jobs worldwide."

This grow forever thing probably won't end well.

What if you took every song digitally available, along with their ratings, and shoved them into an ai...
Would love to hear what it could come up with.

It is with great sorrow that we report the passing on the legendary icon Nichelle Nichols. No words.

@freakazoid @jerry The best description of the problem I've ever heard is: developers fixed the "it works on my machine" problem by just shipping every user a copy of their machine

Four more variations I liked a lot:

"ink painting" (NOT the same as "pen and ink"). Ink painting is a traditional style in East Asia, whereas "pen and ink" is more of a Western style. The ink is applied with a brush, rather than a nib.

"pixel art" (I love that it knows this one). Basically a retro-game style.

"stained glass"

Of what you see in books, believe 75%. Of newspapers, believe 50%. And of
TV news, believe 25% -- make that 5% if the anchorman wears a blazer.

I can't access the Indian government's COVID portal, COWIN, from outside India. Which means I'll probably need a VPN. But the govt is at war with VPN providers. And they have no solutions of their own. Which means eventually the best way to access digital India will be from within India itself. 😕

Oh dang its my fediversary.

How to never pay for or pirate movies anymore: if you wanna watch a movie just watch the trailer and you get all the cool bits, since those are in the movie just for the trailer.

Then you can guess the rest of the plot (it's pretty much always the same anyway). If you want to confirm the plot just read the wikipedia page.

Congrats, you didn't waste 2 hours and still got time to do something more interesting!

Home now. Executive summary of the day:
- walking time 7.5 hours
- did not climb any mountains
- did not see abandoned mines
- dd not make coffee
- did not have lunch
- did completely lose the trail I was following about 4 times
- did consider writing a will on more than one occasion
- did realise I was completely out of my depth multiple times
- every part of me hurts and is slightly damp now
- made it to the car just as it got dark

Best day ever. No regrets.

I love books. Real, paper books. I love the feel of the paper, the weight on my chest, the smell… I purchase books to support the authors and so I can make notes in the margins and underline passages.

I only keep the books I might read again & donate the others to local library.

With the recent discovery of some new (to me) authors (Robert Crais, Walter Mosley, Mick Herron, Don Winslow), I was out of room. Stacks of books everywhere. So time for more bookshelves. I can almost hear them sigh.
