Babylon 5 Watch Through
The moment Ivanova started using crutches I thought “oh no, Claudia Christian got hurt” and I was right.
Apparently she was afraid she’d be written of the show for a broken ankle – sounds like a really tight production environment. JMS apparently had “escape hatches” to write out any character on the show and as an actor, that’s gotta feel like a sword of Damocles 😔
Babylon 5 Watch Through
No one has told Claudia Christian that Ivonova is not the main character of B5 and it’s *amazing*. Similar to Nana Visitor / Kira – they both steal the show IMO.
I learned a lot this week. I learned about systemd, Postgres, and Sidekiq, but I also learned more about the boundary between what I do/don't know.
A Mastodon server is a complex thing and it needs to be understood in order to scale it up. You can't just throw money at this kind of problem because that won't work. I enjoy this learning process, but it can be stressful when the server is under heavy load 😅
The instance scaling continues to be a success. I haven't touched it since Tuesday night and memory/CPU/load have all levelled off 🎉
This graph shows the typical metrics before Monday, then during the initial influx, our first attempt to scale, and our second (successful) attempt to scale.
No more idling CPUs! This isn't the whole picture, as our Sidekiq queues were overwhelmed Monday&Tuesday. No more of that either
@twitter how you doing bud?
I've made a deliberate choice against a quoting feature because it inevitably adds toxicity to people's behaviours. You are tempted to quote when you should be replying, and so you speak at your audience instead of with the person you are talking to. It becomes performative. Even when doing it for "good" like ridiculing awful comments, you are giving awful comments more eyeballs that way. No quote toots. Thank's
Today went really well. The new Sidekiq setup (multiple systemd services, to scale up specific in-demand queues) has worked out perfectly! CPUs aren’t idling as much and load average is still super-reasonable. I never saw the queue size exceed 500 all day, while yesterday we reached 45k
Sidekiq queues haven't broken past 500 all day, amazing.
"Fix your scaling issues with this one weird trick! systemd *hates* it!"
it's actually mentioned in the official docs: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/scaling/ I should send a pull request to emphasize how impactful splitting up the Sidekiq daemon can be.
The instance stayed up overnight with the new config changes (always a concern haha). Sidekiq queues are empty and have already chewed through an average day’s amount of jobs. I’m excited/terrified to see what happens today!
Babylon 5 Watch Through
wrapped up season one, started season two
the season one finale was pretty good. paid off a lot, and set up a lot. good pacing.
the season two opening credits narrative took a steep step backwards. CG got marginally better. I'm not sure I like this Sheridan guy yet.
Created mastodon.technology in 2017.
