mmmmmkay I wrote a blog post. first one since ✨ the quarantine ✨ so yeah.

it's about how I've come to view communication as a problem solving tool ashfurrow.com/blog/communicati

so obviously this is just me sharing lessons I learned from therapy, but like, more software developers _should_ probably be in therapy, so

oh, and the blog post talks about how communication as a problem-solving tool has to >start< from a common ground, a shared understanding and goals. if you don't share / can't find this, then communication is probably not the tool you need to solve this problem. incidentally, this is why debating with fascists is counterproductive.

@ashfurrow
You can (in MOST cases) find sufficient common ground in the fact that we're all people... but not always in that last ine
Though there are other additional reasons as to why that part is counterproductive ^^

pol

@toast there are for sure a lot of reasons it's bad, aye. the way I look at it is that everyone in the conversation has to share the common ground. while I think fascists are people, they don't necessarily reciprocate

pol

@ashfurrow yup, precisely
it does work with most, though ^^ (as a starting point, anyway)

pol

@ashfurrow What other tools may be preferable in place of communication?

pol

@deshipu could a law. like if you were an engineer asked to build a car that cheated emissions, then there’s not a shared understanding with your employer imo

pol

@deshipu Unless you meant fascists, which, well there are a bunch of ways to deal with them.

pol

@ashfurrow I'm all ears. And if you have any sources I should rather read, that would be even better — I don't expect you to summarize it all for me. If you don't have anything at hand right now, that's fine too.

pol

@deshipu I’ll find some later. Generally, isolating them is a good move (look at Gab). But there are groups out there focused on de-radicalization, also groups like Life After Hate.
