comment about "master"

@ashfurrow

ugh, we really need to get away from using master in this context :/

comment about "master"

@maloki @ashfurrow how about we just all agree to use upstream?

It's often the more accurate term, and it doesn't have any unfortunate history.

comment about "master"

@RandomDamage @maloki "upstream" is good, but is already used for another concept. Naming things is hard! We'll get there, though.

comment about "master"

@ashfurrow @maloki there's a little overlap, but I think it isn't too bad.

comment about "master"

@RandomDamage @maloki _I_ agree, but when trying to change the name of something that already exists, little things like this will get used to argue against the change. Programmers gonna programmer.

comment about "master"

@ashfurrow @maloki true.

All the more reason to just do the thing and let others follow or not ;)

But I chose that one specifically because it's already in use and close to the right meaning.

Beats the pants off what's been done to hacker.

comment about "master"

@RandomDamage Exactly this, I'm not here for having the arguments, I'm here to create change. We'll probably decide on something and then stick to it. Those who want to follow can, those who don't don't have to. @ashfurrow

comment about "master"

@maloki @RandomDamage I'm not playing devil's advocate – I like this change, too. I'm only saying that it's important to think about how we might get more people to follow us, how to persuade them.

People will tend to adhere to the status quo, and I think that considering how to win them over is an important part of creating change.

comment about "master"

@ashfurrow @maloki @RandomDamage Is "main" an option? "upstream" to me sounds like a remote.

comment about "master"

@uliwitness @ashfurrow @maloki upstream is used in distribution communities to refer to the original source of packages.

Main or trunk works for a primary repository fork.

comment about "master"

@uliwitness @ashfurrow @maloki @RandomDamage agreed, "main" works as a drop in replacement for "master".

If you're using release branching techniques you should be using stuff like "rel" anyways.
And if the repo is a site, "prod" and "staging" are often good default branch names.

comment about "master"

@ashfurrow @RandomDamage let's just get a few chosen white men to say it, without them arguing about it with others (and ignore those who do) and I think we'll be fine.

comment about "master"

@maloki Yes, but it's tricky. Obviously "master/slave" is not appropriate, but in this context, "master" is used like "master key" (not that anyone's feelings/response to the term are invalid). The drive to move away from "master" branches is probably going to face more pushback than "master/slave", despite being the right decision, long-term.

It would take someone like GitHub changing this for it to take hold. Fingers crossed.

comment about "master"

@ashfurrow @maloki Well, Yoda is a master ;)

But, aside from personal feelings about the terminology, for me "master" is not the best name for the default branch because it is usually used as "current" (or "development", or, yes, "trunk"). In the company I work for we have it renamed to "devel" in most our repos BTW.

comment about "master"

@maloki @ashfurrow I'm totally on-board with “mainline” as a replacement for “master”. Even has the same autocomplete prefix.

Toot toot!

comment about "master"

@maloki @ashfurrow why, when there is no 'slave' in this context?

comment about "master"

@mvz Because connotations. @ashfurrow

comment about "master"

@maloki @ashfurrow That is not very helpful, I'm afraid.

comment about "master"

@mvz @ashfurrow you do you. I don't have energy to discuss the validity of trying to get away from that and other terms in tech work I do.

You can do whatever you want in work you do.

comment about "master"

@maloki @ashfurrow I wasn't looking for a discussion, just for an explanation, since this issue was new to me, but OK.

comment about "master"

@mvz @maloki it is because, I believe, “master” has connotations of slavery even without “slave” being explicitly included. let me know what I can clarify – language is tricky!

comment about "master"

@ashfurrow Thank you for putting words to it which my mind didn't have energy to articulate <3

@mvz

comment about "master"

@maloki @mvz these are complicated, nuanced ideas, so it makes sense that putting them to text is difficult ❤️

comment about "master"

@ashfurrow @maloki "master" has many different meanings. Would this reasoning mean not using, e.g., 'master of science', 'master singer', 'master class', etc.? Or just meanings that refer to telling other people what to do?

comment about "master"

@mvz @maloki The point here is that "master" always has the connotation of slavery for people who are *still* oppressed by society. Try putting yourself in their shoes; not using the term is a way to working in tech easier.

Let me put it to you this way: if we *didn't* already use the term "master", would there be a good reason to start? Probably not.

comment about "master"

@ashfurrow @mvz @maloki

"prime" might be a good candidate if Amazon hadn't already made it their brand name and therefore no longer legal to use in any other context

comment about "master"

@ashfurrow @maloki Thanks for your insightful explanation. As a non-native English speaker and non-American this stuff is not very intuitive.

comment about "master"

@mvz @maloki I understand. I'm Canadian so I'm sometimes in a similar position. Thanks for approaching this with an open mind!

@ashfurrow to be honest, I don't know which I'd be more upset about: the repo, or the pasta.

@ashfurrow good current time of day! this is an Goode Thread

@ashfurrow this _almost_ certainly one of the best ways to get an edge in Fortnite 😉

@ashfurrow double-wrapping helps protect against potential punctures in the outer bag letting air in and spoiling the bread. Also, the inner wrap is slightly more structurally hard which aids in squish-protection. That’s my guess.

@Archimage makes sense! I never saw it in Canada or The Netherlands.

@ashfurrow It's to introduce another step between you and toast.

@ashfurrow fear of bugs? *we are weevils and we are here for the grain product*

@ashfurrow It keeps all those delicious alpha and beta particles in the loaf until you unwrap it. ☢️

@ashfurrow
I've always wondered this myself. And it's always the good stuff. Maybe it's cause we're all fat and they're trying to slow is down by wrapping it twice. :P

@Montesboogie apparently it exists in other countries, but usually on not-fresh breads.

@ashfurrow
Also, thank you for mastodon.technology here's some monkey love for ya' 🙊❤️
