This whole incident has made me want to contribute more, especially to forgefriends and gitea. And also to think more about understanding dependencies. Trying to say something funny here about tokio, but tokio is no laughing matter 😅

Ugh. I should probably be a better community member and refrain from angry subtooting, but the very common practice of holding individuals responsible for systemic problems really grinds my gears.

“If you don’t like giving free software to corporations, …”—the smug and vile apologia for corporatocracy.

In this vein, I’m excited about federated forges. It’s essential that we pull FLOSS away from GitHub.

Heaping blame on an obviously mentally ill person is a symptom of the lack of empathy that underpins the FLOSS problem(s) and so much more.

But we don’t need to have empathy for corporations. Indeed, it’s better if we don’t.

@rysiek While GH obviously has the right to continue publishing an older version of the software, I wonder whether they retain the right to publish it *under the developer’s username*? That seems like something that should be covered by their TOS but perhaps they missed it?

how come the retort is always "if you don't want companies using your code, don't release it as free" and never "if you don't want your code to break, don't pull code from an internet rando"

#Gitea is joining the fediverse 🎉 We can now announce we've been accepted into the #NLnet funding round that we applied to. nlnet.nl/project/Gitea/

Thank you to @NGIZero @dachary @forgefriends and so many others for getting us to this point.

We are very much looking forward to many wonderful things that federation within forges can support.

This HN thread captures some of my despair over the direction the web is heading: news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2

"I also don't think that people are creating websites anymore? Where is there supposed to be info for the search engine to crawl? All real user content is on reddit, instagram, twitter and youtube."

"[The WWW] is rapidly becoming a defunct protocol, the culmination of a decades-long shift in the Internet's center of mass away from browsers and towards centralized and commercialized apps."

The Prince of Wales's motto is "Ich dien", which is German for "I serve".

But in Welsh it sounds like "eich tîn", which means "your arse".

I don't know whether they've told him.

Out my window right now I am watching a cruise ship arrive and in my mind it’s just full of Omicron. I hate this timeline.

The idea is that side projects will keep me from, say, wiping my machine and reinstalling the OS and restoring from backup, you know, just to see.
