There used to be a thing here called a Joint Spousal Consolidation Loan. They were around from 1990–2006. It allowed spouses to consolidate their student loans into a single loan at a lower rate. (1/2)

Among its problems is the fact that it can’t be separated. Even after a divorce. Even now that that type of loan is no longer legal to offer. It financially binds a divorced couple in perpetuity, longer than children do.
And how would it ever change? The number of people entrapped in this predatory zombie loan is relatively small, and just getting older. (2/2)

Epilogue: well my cousin, who was trapped in one of these loans, was just liberated from it by her husband, who paid off the balance. Rejoice!
