some thoughts on "trigger warnings"

I give up. Whatever. If you are so God-awful sensitive that you can't handle a well-within the bounds of normal discussion debate on politics, then there's not much point in anything.

but I will be polite.

@Migukin I agree. I'm not sure how we got to this place where having a civilized discussion is so difficult. The whole point is to be exposed to a different POV. Safe spaces shouldn't be a thing, but civility should.

@Trav1sty @Migukin It's not about not being able to handle it, it's about having some time without thinking too hard about something that already ruins your life as it is.
Just like if you break up with someone you'll prefer not to see them too much for a while. The effect is the same about politics when it has too many direct consequences on your life.
Having even a civilized discussion about something that is in fact depressing hurts people.

@CobaltVelvet @Trav1sty

I pretty much completely disagree with what you just wrote. But you are the majority and I want to keep things civil, so I won't press the issue. I understand that Twitter has left you violated mentally in some ways -- it has me -- but it has also toughened me up in others. As long as the discussion is civil, I see no need to gratuitously use the CW. But my general response is -- Meh.

@Migukin @CobaltVelvet I don't see how that's feasible. At which point do U consider the basic things around U as "too much to handle?" There's nothing wrong with trying to shield your feelings from what's going on around you, but at the same time, it's not practical. Life is going to happen whether you like it or not. Maybe just step back, regroup, and then rejoin? That would be a healthier repose than "I need a safe place" (which you should already have at home.)

@Trav1sty @Migukin Fun fact: this is 100% said by people who never experienced it, who never had to live in fear, who never had their basic needs ignored by their country, who do not have to watch targeted oppression every single day of their life *everywhere*.

What's really not practical is to stay alone at home doing drugs just to stay alive a few more days.
That's why we're building safe places, we don't all have a safe and fulfilling home.

@Trav1sty @Migukin By all of this I mean: do you have to see people wanting to literally murder you in a genocide and strip you of all human rights, *on a daily basis*, even when just playing a MP game, trying to think about something else?

Well I do. And I can guarantee you that however thick your skin can be, it will eventually get to you and you'll end up either crying in your bed or doing too much drugs or blowing up a public place. No one wants that.

@CobaltVelvet @Trav1sty

It's pointless to discuss this. You're obviously too easily "triggered" and anything I say at this point will only make matters worse. Godspeed.

@Migukin @Trav1sty You're obviously way too privileged to even think someone else's life may not be as good. Don't be an idiot on purpose, that's pathetic. At least try.

@Migukin (Of course, then you followed that up with this, so -- you may want to strive for 'polite' a little harder. Childish mockery usually doesn't fall in those bounds.)

@sydneyfalk

Um.....whatever happened to "irony." But I am in the minority. I will try my hardest to abide by what people want on this service. What people want is no discussion on anything that might cause any triggering at all. And so I feel as though maybe this service is not the Twitter replacement I had hoped.

@Migukin

Ironic, sure. Irony about other people's suffering is the crotch kick joke of irony. It's pathetic punching down.

Here's another example of irony: It's behind a click. You're arguing about a single CLICK, and you're still miffed about it. Other people are asking in relation to their psychological well-being.

You are miffed about a CLICK.

They are 'miffed' about something survival-related.

If that's not irony, then I guess I don't know what is. :wink:

@sydneyfalk

Never go to a Dave Chappelle show or Amy Schumer show. I try to use the CW feature CLICK as much as possible, but the service does not have a universal CW feature as best I can tell, so people like me accidentally trigger people without meaning to. Sigh. We're all doomed. Only the extremes will discuss anything now and civil discussion of moderates is over.

@Migukin (And to clarify: Your feelings about the service weren't in question. I understood them. They are a lesser priority than the feelings of people who experience genuine psychological harm, instead of 'inconvenience'. If you need to complain about it more, feel free. I've said all I think I can cogently say on the matter, but I'm sure there's nits to pick. I think you've made up your mind, or you're a very eloquent troll, and either way, I'm bowing out of the discussion.)

@sydneyfalk

I am trigger by you calling me a troll.

I am not a troll.

@sydneyfalk

You have triggered me too much. This service is not for me, at least for the time being. So, have your safe space. I may come back occasionally, but I prefer being able to have civil discussion without people freaking out.
