TIL the assumption that string length does not change when upper-cased is false!

Harvard is a very, very selective school. Only 3.43% of applicants get in. But that's not the whole story. Writing in The Guardian, Tayo Bero says that 43% of the white student body was admitted on criteria other than merit.

Those 43% are ALDCs: athletes, legacies, dean's interest list (children of major donors) or children (of Harvard faculty). Three quarters of ALDCs do not have the grades to be admitted to Harvard on their own merit.

Was looking for this for a while - useful tool to design your performance budget for file/bundle size on web. performancebudget.io/

Found these numbers interesting and reassuring - we are not brainwashed into liking ads.
In general, ads manipulate people, and on some level we sense it and dislike being manipulated.
Not surprising that the fediverse (mastodon et al) has a stronger preference for ad-free than Twitter users.

What distro?

Concept: Augmented reality goggles, but all they do is block ads in real life

For more context/editorial on contextual vs. behavioral ads, Cory Doctorow has a nice thread - twitter.com/doctorow/status/12

I'm going to run this poll separately on Twitter as well because I'm curious about any differences.

If you could choose and not lose anything, what level/type of ads would you choose to see?

When this happens, I always think back to the quote by @unclebobmartin, "the only way to go fast is to go well"

The most serious solution I know of is the Hippocratic License [1] which prohibits use of the software which violates principles of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
I’m not an expert on any of this but looking forward to learning more.
I hope platforms like twitter.com/WIRED will highlight the work being done to find solutions, as well as surfacing the problem.

In an attempt that proved ineffective, but reflected an interest in addressing this problem, @thejameskyle modified the license on lerna to prohibit use by org.s which collaborate with ICE.

It’s cool to highlight the problem - open source developers almost uniformly do not want our code used to spread hate or incite violence.
There is also a movement that is trying to solve this, and it’s worth acknowledging.
