I think my best chance to use Linux is if I can get a relatively cheap laptop (maybe sub-$500) that is known to have great Linux support and good enough performance for basic use (web browsing, basic web app development). Can anyone recommend such a unicorn laptop?
Used T4xx-series Thinkpad is what I'd go for. Maybe with an SSD and RAM upgrade.
FWIW, the biggest resource drain for me these days is modern web browsers. My 2013 Air is stlll usable but I can only have one Firefox session running and then I need to periodically kill and restart it to shrink the memory footprint.
Compared to that, my devtools are perfectly zippy; mruby rebuilds from scratch in about 30 seconds.
@CodingItWrong Thinkpads are the standard obv, but I've also had good experiences with Asus laptops. The annoying part is they have way too many models, so you'll still want to check online to see how people fared with Linux on whatever particular model you're considering.
@dvshkn i am so uninformed about linux and non-Apple hardware that it was not obvs to me that Thinkpads are the standard, so tx for telling me! 🙌
