Content pays off. Wondered why data from Fathom Analytics showed two posts getting the most hits; found they’re on the front page of Google for, respectively, “eleventy vs” and “ulysses icloud sync”:

Based on github.com/11ty/eleventy/issue I today switched out dev servers — from `browser-sync` to `svrx` — and feel it’s a great choice. svrx.io

Tried the Vercel CLI yesterday just out of curiosity (trying to figure out something; long story) and inadvertently “broke” the auto-deploy-from-GitHub feature. Only after going back and killing remnants of the CLI — including `vercel.json` — did everything work again. (Whew.)

One wonders whether, about 30 years after the American Revolution, surviving Loyalists would’ve been allowed to erect of Benedict Arnold as a “tribute” to their “heritage” of supporting George III instead of their country. One further wonders why any reasonably patriotic U.S. citizen would be upset, generations later, when the traitor’s were pulled down.

‪Users of render.com who’ve previously used Netlify, what led you to switch? Specifically wondering about hosting, but would appreciate hearing about other applications as well. Thanks!‬

Web image nerdiness

Gave Cloudinary’s free plan a brief try last weekend, mainly because I’m concerned about exceeding Netlify’s free monthly builds limit as my site adds more hero images. However, some of the URL-based transformations didn’t work as documented — chiefly aspect-ratio-related stuff — and, of course, the meter was running every time I tried something else. Finally decided I’ll wait until I’m closer to Netlify’s free builds limit. That’s some months away ... I **think**.

Ok so current challenge: find the nicest possible way to tell the CTO this whole thing is depressingly stupid.

If I bring it up I bet the justification is going to be "we already use this all for Windows so it'll be less work" but oooohhhh boy are you in for a surprise. One of two things will happen:

1: all our tools and scripts are modified to support two completely different systems, making everything about them substantially more complicated and introducing a terrifying number of bugs and gotchas.

2: all our tools and scripts get split in 2, with one set for Windows and a second that does Linux terribly.

The Windows nuts are trying to use Powershell for Linux deployments. This is going to go horribly.

"Two peacekeepers with United Nations (UN) forces in Mali were killed on Saturday in an attack on their convoy in the north of the west African nation, the U.N. mission in Mali said on Sunday. "

Web typography nerdiness

Reverted my site’s body copy to Public Sans today (the variable version now available from the “v2” Google Fonts interface). Really like this “font” family and the thinking behind it. public-sans.digital.gov/

Having replaced my site’s build-slowing PNGs for JPGs and reverted to Public Sans and Roboto Mono Web “fonts” I prefer, will now TRY to leave it alone for a while and, y’know, WRITE stuff. ✍️

So I made this today to express the potential that space exploration has to unite humanity, if done right. 🚀🌌

Do you like the dark variant more or the light one? Would you like wallpaper versions of this?
